Shorts and t-shirts option for detainees

Prison
Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner

Shorts and t-shirts are now being given to people arrested and held in police cells to help provide more dignity to vulnerable detainees.

The two-piece sets replace smock-type clothing that was offered but considered to be undignified for those at risk of self harm.

The new clothing issued in 2018/19 to vulnerable detainees is one of the changes imposed after volunteers inspected custody suites in Surrey.

Other improvements to how people are treated in police cells include making sure embassies have been notified of the arrest of a foreign national and more female detainees being offered sanitary products.

Surrey is said to be “leading nationally” with its treatment of females in custody with more than 80% of those asked saying they were offered sanitary products by a female officer.

Independent Custody Visiting is carried out by volunteers to check on the welfare of detainees and the changes made were highlighted in the ICV annual report.

Surrey Police has three custody suites in Guildford, Staines and Salfords with 15 spare cells in Woking.

Tafida: Family celebrate daughter leaving hospital

Tafida Raqeeb
PA

The family of a severely disabled five-year-old girl have marked her departure for an Italian hospital after winning an "emotional" life-support treatment battle.

Supporters of Tafida Raqeeb gathered outside the Royal London Hospital this morning for a balloon release as the youngster headed to the Gaslini children's hospital in Genoa.

Tafida's parents won a recent High Court fight with hospital bosses in London, when a judge ruled that the youngster could be moved to Italy.

Multi-coloured balloons, which read "flying to Italy" and featured a picture of Tafida, were released in unison.

Tafida's uncle, Abdul Malik, 36, from Whitechapel, said: "It's just amazing to see everyone here today - you know we've had a long fight from day one."

Kinks' guitarist backs campaign to save arcade

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Arcade
Ian Dunn

Rock legend Dave Davies has backed a campaign to save a high street shopping arcade from demolition.

The Kinks guitarist, who grew up in Fortis Green Road, Muswell Hill, called for the Grand Arcade in High Road, North Finchley to be preserved.

Built in the 1930s in the then-popular Art Deco style, the arcade is home to a range of small shops, including a jeweller’s and a photo studio.

But it could be torn down to make way for new flats and shops under regeneration proposals drawn up by Barnet Council.

Mr Davies tweeted his support for the arcade.

He said: “The Grand Arcade is definitely of historical value. We need to preserve places like this in England and in London. It’s only going to benefit the area in the long term.”

Mr Davies, who co-founded The Kinks in 1964 with brother Ray, used to buy guitar strings from a shop in the arcade as a youngster.

More than 1,100 people have signed a petition set up by North Finchley resident Ian Dunn to save the arcade and have it locally listed by the council.

Barnet Council has been approached for comment.

BBC

Unemployment increased faster in London than in the rest of the UK, according to new figures.

The unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to an estimated 4.6% in the June-to-August period, compared to 3.9% nationally.

The Office for National Statistics said employment growth had "cooled noticeably".

But the unemployment rate is still close to its lowest level for 44 years.

Wages continued to outpace the rate of inflation, with earnings excluding bonuses growing at an annual pace of 3.8%.
