'No evidence' parking changes hurting trade

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Shropshire Council says there's "no evidence" that changes to parking charges in Ludlow have hurt businesses in the town.

Councillor Tim Gill, the Ludlow mayor, said the new charges were driving businesses away from the town and claimed trade was down 18%, but the local authority's transport commissioner Kevin Atkin said the only effect had been to see more motorists park in outlying car parks.

Mr Aitkin also said there was evidence drivers were using on-street parking less and making more use of debit and credit cards to pay for their tickets.

There is no evidence to suggest the new parking strategy is impacting negatively on the town. However, there is evidence that the parking behaviour has changed with increased usage of outlying car parks within the town.”

Road blockade bid as bus row escalates

Bus users in Bishop's Castle, in Shropshire, are planning to blockade a main road in protest at cuts to their services.

Some residents are angry at plans which they say will see five existing bus services reduced to just one a day.

BBC

Shropshire Council has said it's aware of the concerns and will take them into consideration.

It is targeting savings of almost £500,000 a year through a series of cuts in transport subsidies across the county.

Protesters are hoping to bring traffic to a standstill on the A488 at the crossroads with School Lane.

There are so many people who are absolutely reliant on a bus service, not just for jobs or visiting elderly relatives, but just for getting to other transport networks."
