Changes to bin collections in Coventry

Garden waste collections in Coventry have been suspended for at least the next two weeks.

The city council said this meant food waste would have to go in the household waste bins for the time being, unless it can be composted at home.

Requests for new bins, bulky waste collections and bin repairs remain suspended too.

The council also warned there may be some delays to household waste and recycling collections as crews settle into a new way of working and asked people to be patient.

North Warwickshire Borough Council announced today that it is also suspending green waste collections for the rest of the month at least.

Other collections will continue as normal.

Vardys suspected of being mystery scrubs donors

Amy Woodfield

BBC News

A junior doctor based at Leicester Royal Infirmary said she "had to do more than a double take" when she saw a donation of £10,000 on her appeal to have more scrubs made for front-line healthcare workers.

Dr Nicki Lygo, who works in acute internal medicine, set up a crowdfunding page and met her target much quicker than expected thanks to one donor in particular.

She told Radio Leicester: “My colleague had tweeted Rebekah Vardy asking for a retweet for the appeal and that donation came in under the initials RV, so I’ve made an assumption and would just like to say a huge, huge thank you.”

The wife of the Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy hasn't confirmed the donation came from her.

Dr Lygo said the money will cover the cost of having the protective clothing made but not the fabric itself.

Judge rules woman 'lacks capacity to use social media'

PA Media

A judge has ruled a Leicester woman with a learning disability lacks the capacity to use social media or the internet.

Judge Lindsey George also ruled the woman, who cannot be identified, does not have the capacity to consent to sex.

The judge considered the woman's case at the Court of Protection in Leicester, where issues relating to people who may lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves are heard.

A social worker for Leicester City Council told the judge that the woman, who is in her 30s and in a supported living placement, trusted her "online friends", partly because they looked "nice" and was unable to understand that using social media and the internet could put her at risk.

Blocked sewers increase due to 'toilet roll alternatives'

Sandish Shoker

BBC News

Water company Severn Trent says it has been "much busier than normal" due to more blockages being caused by kitchen roll and wipes being flushed down the toilet.

The company said it has dealt with 3,000 sewer flooding and blockages in the past fortnight.

Grant Mitchell from Severn Trent said: "We know some people are having to resort to using a whole manner of things to substitute for toilet roll at the moment, but a sewer blockage is the last thing anyone needs right now.

"We wanted to let everyone know that kitchen roll and wipes are not designed to break down like loo roll is so please remember to bin them."

The airport said across the two weeks to 29 March, cargo aircraft movements increased by an average of 7.4% per day.

These flight increases are helping to meet the demand for medical and PPE, and goods ordered for home delivery.

The airport, which has the UK's largest dedicated air cargo operation, said it is also taking on flights from other airports which are now closed at night.

Karen Smart, from EMA, said: "It is at times like these when EMA really demonstrates its national value and shows how important air freight is to keeping Britain moving.

"Our location means that we're perfectly placed to serve a huge population, some of whom are in urgent need of rapid deliveries."
