PC Andrew Dear
Police Federation

PC Andrew Dear, of Warwickshire Police, was named as national winner at the awards on Thursday.

The officer, who was first on the scene of a serious crash, wedged himself under the roof of the upturned vehicle in order to help paramedics treat a trapped man.

Speaking of the incident afterwards, he said of the casualty: "Knowing what his family would probably be thinking had he not made it, knowing somebody was there with him when he was injured, trapped – that means everything.”

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said: "PC Dear’s bravery is truly extraordinary and deserves to be recognised with this award."

AR road safety app to be made available to all schools

An augmented reality app, teaching schoolchildren road safety lessons, is to be extended across the country after being trialed in Warwickshire.

Arility
Warwickshire County Council

The Arility app layers virtual objects over real world settings to provide travel and road safety information to primary school aged children.

Trials have begun in Warwickshire, but a two-year £200,000 investment by the Department for Transport will partly be used to roll out the scheme across the UK.

Transport minister Michael Ellis said: "It is vital that we find new ways to make sure young people learn about and are interested in road safety".

Tumour removed through nose in hospital first

A mother-of-one said she had her "life back" after becoming the first patient at a hospital to have a brain tumour removed through her nose.

Jackie Llewellyn-Robinson said the operation at University Hospital, Coventry "saved her sight".

The 48-year-old said it was "amazing" how quickly she had been able to "bounce back" from the surgery.

Surgeon, Professor Amjad Shad, who operated on her said the procedure is "at the cutting edge of neurosurgery".

Mrs Lewellyn-Robinson, a Jaguar Land Rover employee from Kenilworth, first experienced dizziness and blurred vision in early 2017 and a MRI scan revealed the tumour.

She underwent the procedure earlier this year and only afterwards was told it had been a hospital first.

I was quite relieved because it had meant I wasn't pressured, I am not sure being the first at anything is necessarily reassuring. Now I am completely tumour-free and ready to get out there and live life."

Sibley gets England Lions call

Warwickshire opening batsman Dom Sibley - English county cricket's top run scorer in 2019 - is one of four players chosen to make their England Lions debut next week against Australia A at Canterbury (14-17 July).

Kent opener Zak Crawley, Gloucestershire wicketkeeper/batsman James Bracey and Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson are the other newcomers.

Sibley, who last represented England at Under-19 level in 2014, hit a career-best 244 at Canterbury this week, the highest individual score in the County Championship this season, as he became the first to reach 1,000 first-class runs this season.

As to who will captain the side, that is yet to be announced.

All the players were due to have been in Championship action for their counties that week.

England Lions XI:James Bracey (Gloucestershire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Lewis Gregory (Somerset), Jack Leach (Somerset), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Sam Northeast (Hampshire), Jamie Porter (Essex), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire)
