Appeal over woman missing from Sheffield

Police are asking for help finding the 18-year-old who is missing from her supported living address in the Burngreave area.

She went missing on 23 June and is believed to be in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, where she has family connections

Dszenifer is described as Hungarian, 5ft 2ins tall with olive skin, long dark brown hair and a piercing on the left side of her lip.

Anyone who knows where she can be found is being asked to contact South Yorkshire Police.

Man attacked then hit by car in Brighouse

A 28-year-old man suffered a broken pelvis after a row outside a pub ended up with him being hit by a car, West Yorkshire Police say.

It happened in Brighouse last night.

Officers were called at about 22:15 to West Park Street to a report the man had been attacked after an arguement.

He was then involved in a road traffic collision with a red BMW and taken to hospital with the fractured pelvis.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding and remains in police custody.

A former Barnsley, Huddersfield and Scunthorpe player has announced his retirement from football.

Paul Hayes played 76 games for the Reds before going out on loan to Huddersfield Town.

He also played more than 200 games for Scunthorpe, signing for the Iron in 2002.

Appeal to next PM over rising number of cyber sex crimes

The number of cyber-related sex crimes involving children has more than doubled in Yorkshire and the Humber region over the past four years.

Figures from the NSPCC show almost 1,500 cases were recorded in the last year, compared to just over 700 three years ago.

Helen Westerman from the charity says: "We're really concerned that we've seen a huge increase in the number of police-recorded offences against children relating to sex crimes.

"Twenty-two cyber-related sex crimes being reported a day in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the figures have doubled in the last five years."

The charity is calling on the next prime minister to prioritise online safety.

Woman injured in climbing fall

A woman had to be airlifted to hospital after falling while climbing in North Yorkshire.

The 21-year-old, from the Durham area, sustained serious injuries, at the Wainstones, a popular climbing area on the moors above Stokesley.

Volunteers from the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were able to drive over fields to within about 200m from the crag along with a paramedic from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

She was treated at the scene then carried on a mountain rescue stretcher to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and transported to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.

Sir Gary Verity resignation: Investigation updates due

Updates on two investigations into Welcome to Yorkshire are due to be given to a meeting of the tourism organisation's board later.

The inquiries were set up after the resignation of Sir Gary Verity (pictured) which came amid allegations about his expenses and behaviour towards colleagues.

Sir Gary, who resigned on health grounds, paid back £40,000 expenses before stepping down last March.

When his resignation was announced, Sir Gary said he had tried to "set the highest standards of personal performance and leadership".

In April, the tourism organisation announced the investigations looking into Sir Gary's expenses and behaviour since his appointment in 2008.

Search for missing West Yorkshire 13-year-old

A 13-year-old boy has gone missing from West Yorkshire, police say.

Paul Powell was reported missing from school in Halifax on Friday and was last seen near Odsal Stadium in Bradford at about 21:00 that night.

He is described as black, 5ft 1in tall, of stocky build, with brown eyes and black hair.

Officers say when last seen he was wearing black jogging bottoms with white stripes and a grey coat.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the police.

Yorkshire MEP hits out at Rees-Mogg over EU iPad tweets

A Yorkshire MEP has hit out at a newly-elected MEP after she described a free iPad she was given as part of her new role as an example of "the corrupt gravy train" of the EU.

Annunziata Rees-Mogg‏, a Brexit MEP for the East Midlands and sister of Conservative MP Jacob, posted on Twitter about the "shiny new iPad I was given by the European Parliament for no very obvious reason".

Responding, Labour MEP Richard Corbett said she wanted to "rubbish everything about the EU, even when you know the truth.

"The Parliament gives you an iPad configured to parliamentary work, so you don’t need so many paper documents, saving money and trees, and can work more effectively," he added.

Chief Constable decision a step closer

The Temporary Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police has been named as the preferred candidate to take on the role full-time.

John Robins, who has been in the role on a temporary basis since December, has been named as Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson's preferred candidate.

Mr Robins joined West Yorkshire Police in 1990 and was appointed Deputy Chief Constable in 2017.

A panel will confirm West Yorkshire's new Chief Constable next month.

Former chief Dee Collins retired in April over "health issues".

Great Get Together events inspired by Jo Cox get under way

Thousands of community events have been organised for the Great Get Together weekend which kicks off today and which is inspired by murdered West Yorkshire Labour MP Jo Cox.

Mrs Cox, 41, was killed in Birstall, part of her Batley and Spen constituency, in June 2016 by Thomas Mair.

Events are happening as far afield as Hawaii, Dubai and Portugal as part of the third annual event.

Leeds United drawn against Salford City in Carabao Cup

Leeds United will face League Two newcomers Salford City in the Carabao Cup first round.

Salford are in the competition for the first time after promotion from the National League in May.

Salford, co-owned by co-owned by six former Manchester United players, will host a Leeds side managed by Marcelo Bielsa, who agreed a contract extension at Elland Road in May.

The draw for the competition, which took place in a Morrisons supermarket, threw up the following ties for Yorkshire's teams:

  • Huddersfield Town v Lincoln City
  • Tranmere Rovers v Hull City
  • Grimsby Town v Doncaster Rovers
  • Bradford City v Preston North End
  • Shrewsbury Town v Rotherham United
  • Sheffield Wednesday v Bury
  • Barnsley v Carlisle United

The fixtures will be played in the week commencing 12 August.

West Yorkshire child sex abuse inquiry police arrest 44

Detectives investigating claims of historical child sex grooming have arrested 44 people.

Four women complained of being abused between 1995 and 2005 when they were aged between 12 and 16.

During the course of an investigation police said they had arrested dozens of people across Bradford, Leeds, Kirklees and other areas of the country.

Those arrested within the past two weeks include 36 men and three women. Five other men were arrested earlier.

West Yorkshire Police, who are dealing with the allegations, said those arrested ranged in age from 39 to 81.

All of the 44 people questioned have been released under investigation.

In a statement police said the allegations of sexual abuse centred around the time the women were children in the Dewsbury and Batley areas of Kirklees.
