Collection of unique musical instruments stolen from lorry

A collection of unique musical instruments have been stolen from a lorry parked up in a layby near Doncaster.

The instruments, described as "unique works of art," were on their way to an exhibition in West Yorkshire when they were stolen.

Police are appealing for information after they were taken from the lorry on Doncaster Road, near to Ackworth, at about 23:00 on 6 June.

Jobs lost as Yorkshire Linen Company shuts it shops

More than 130 people have lost their jobs after a chain of linen shops went out of business.

The Yorkshire Linen Company operated 19 stores across the north of England - including in Huddersfield, Hull, Keighley, Leeds and Wakefield - selling towels, bedding and curtains.

Its closure comes four months after the firm shut eight stores as part of a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) designed to keep the business going.

Administrator BDO said the closure was down to challenges on the High Street.

The project also marks the launch of the new Devonshire Quarter, a cultural, conferencing and sporting complex.

The artist has previously worked on commissions for the Southbank Centre in London and Leeds Art Gallery, but the Towner is his largest mural to date.

Keighley drama teacher Lynne Rodgers had sex with boy

A former drama teacher has been jailed for 10 months for sex offences involving a 13-year-old boy in the 1990s.

Lynne Rodgers, then aged 30, engaged in sexual acts with the boy in her car.

The West Yorkshire teacher took him to her home and invited him to have sex with her on the sofa.

Rodgers, of Braithwaite Edge Road, Keighley, admitted gross indecency with a child and indecent assault and will be put on the sex offenders' register.

Jo Cox: Woodland to be planted to celebrate murdered MP

A community woodland is to be planted to celebrate the life of murdered West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox.

The woodland, in Liversedge, will include an outdoor classroom, with local children involved in looking after the 2,000 trees and plants.

The Spen Valley Civic Society hopes to finish planting the woodland by early next year.

Mrs Cox, then MP for Batley and Spen, was shot and stabbed to death in Birstall in 2016, a week before the EU referendum vote.

Death by dangerous driving arrest after motorcyclist dies

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a motorcyclist died in a collision involving a car.

The motorcyclist died after his Kawasaki ZX 600 bike slid across the road and collided with a red Citreon C2 in Worsbrough.

The 60-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene following the collision on Kingwell Road at about 16:30 on Wednesday.

South Yorkshire Police said a 48-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and released under investigation.

Man beaten up on carnival day

Witnesses are being sought after a man was beaten up during a Derbyshire village's carnival day.

Police said the 30-year-old suffered a broken arm and injuries to his head and face when he was attacked in Station Road in Hayfield at about 21:30 on 11 May.

Latest government figures show hundreds of tall buildings across the country are still covered in unsafe materials and work hasn't yet started on half of the blocks that need changing.

The government will not name individual buildings, nor will it give the exact numbers of buildings in each local authority area.

Portrait project to celebrate Jamaican lives in Leeds

The families of first-generation Jamaicans in Leeds are having their portraits taken as part of a project in the city.

Jamaica Society Leeds has been awarded £81,900 for the project, entitled Eulogy, by the Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Eulogy Project will display their photographs next to the ones of their relatives taken in the 40s, 50s and 60s.

The project will tell the stories of those who made the journey to a new life in West Yorkshire from the Caribbean.

Exhibition curator Susan Pitter said: “Eulogy will be a tribute to a generation who left everything and everyone 5,000 miles behind to answer Britain’s call to its Commonwealth citizens.”

The Eulogy Exhibition will be in place from 1 August to 1 September 2019 at Leeds Central Library.

Community wood planted in memory of murdered MP

A community woodland made up of 2,000 trees and plants is being planted to celebrate the life of the former West Yorkshire MP Jo Cox, who was murdered three years ago.

The Spen Valley Civic Society, the organisation behind the scheme, hopes to finish planting the woodland in Liversedge by early next year.

It will also include an outdoor classroom and wheelchair-friendly paths.

Fugitive Hull crime boss could be in Ireland

The head of a drugs gang who has been on the run since being sentenced to 21 years behind bars in December may have fled to Ireland, say police.

Alfred Phillip Dear, 46, from Hull, headed up an organised crime gang who stood trial last year for drug dealing and a cash machine raid.

But he failed to turn up to court in Leeds to hear the verdict and he was sentenced in his absence.

It's now thought that Dear, who is on the UK Crimestoppers’ Most Wanted list, might be in the Republic of Ireland.

Dear, who goes by the name of Alfie and has a Yorkshire accent, is described as white, about 5ft 10in, with grey hair and possibly facial hair.

Anyone with information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police while sightings should be reported to An Garda Siochana.
