Warning prison officers 'working as carers' - Former officer

A former prison officer from Yorkshire says staff are being forced to become carers for a growing number of older inmates who are "dying in front of them."

The man who worked in prisons for more than 30 years and wants to remain anonymous said: "You're looking at young prison staff trained to be prison officers but becoming carers."

The former officer said when he started work older prisoners were transferred to less secure jails when they approached the end of their sentences, but that had changed.

He said: "Now you're getting older prisoners starting big sentences and the young prison officers are coming straight from university, with very little life experience.

"Then they're having to deal with major traumatic events like somebody dying in front of them or caring for somebody at the end of their life."

His concerns were echoed by the chief inspector of prisons, Peter Clarke, who said the Prison Service should consider whether a new type of accommodation was needed, specifically designed to deal with older prisoners.

Ministry of Justice figures show there were 13,617 inmates aged above 50 in June. The Prison Officers Association says increasing numbers are frail, incontinent or have dementia.

The Prison Service said it was working to meet the needs of elderly prisoners.

Damage to Marsden Moor caused by fires that swept across the area six months ago will take "decades to restore", according to the National Trust.

Large swathes of moorland were destroyed in April in a series of fire believed to have been started because of a discarded barbecue.

The Trust says the most significant fire, on 21 April destroyed 700 hectares (2.7 sq miles) of land and burnt for four days. It estimates £500,000 will be needed to repair the damage.

The fires destroyed important peat soils and the habitats of mountain hares and rare ground nesting birds, including curlew and twite.

Since the fire, National Trust members and the local community have donated more than £100,000 for the Marsden Moor Appeal.

Lead Ranger, Tom Harman said; “The damage is a massive blow to this country’s nature conservation and to the wider climate change issues we face across the world."

Natural Flood Management Project Manager Rosie Holdsworth said “The damage caused by the fires will take decades to restore, especially the peat soils."

Police asked to 'have a word' after clubber refused entry

A disgruntled reveller called 999 to ask police to "have a word" with a bouncer at a West Yorkshire club after being refused entry.

West Yorkshire Police's call-handling team shared details of the request on Twitter.

It said: "If a bouncer says you can't go in their club, then you can't go in.

"Don't ring 999 and ask us to 'have a word', it's not going to happen is it?"

The team said it had also taken calls about lost keys and burnt toast.

The West Yorkshire Force said: "People ringing 999 for inappropriate reasons are potentially putting lives at risk by taking call-handlers’ time away from genuine emergency calls."

Train operator Northern's franchise under scrutiny

Train operator Northern, which runs services across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, has been asked by the government to submit proposals suggesting how it can improve its service for passengers, or it faces being removed from the franchise.

During a Transport Committee session, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said he had issued a “request for proposals” as Northern's service had been poor.

In a statement on Friday, Transport for the North said it believed the franchise should be taken into public hands, via what’s known as an Operator of Last Resort (OLR).

The OLR is, on behalf of the government, currently in charge of LNER, the East Coast Mainline intercity franchise.

Mr Shapps told MPs he has asked train operator Arriva and the OLR for a “list of proposals” because the franchise “cannot continue delivering in the current delivery method".

Issues including social disadvantage, ill health and unemployment extend beyond former miners, the report by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Sheffield Hallam University says.

About 77,000 people in Yorkshire's former coalfield communities are on out-of-work benefits, which amounts to about 10% of adults of working age in those areas, the report adds.

Over 40% of coalfield areas in Yorkshire are in the most deprived parts of Britain, it says.

Welcome to Yorkshire had 'spend now, worry later' culture

The new chairman of Welcome to Yorkshire says the tourism agency previously operated under a culture of "spend now, worry about it later".

Peter Box
BBC

Peter Box released two reports this afternoon - one looking into the organisation's finances, and another at its future.

One, dated 29 August, said without a £500,000 loan from North Yorkshire County Council and another £1m investment "Welcome to Yorkshire will run out of cash by November at the latest".

The second revealed, among other matters, it spent £250,000 on its display at this year's Chelsea Flower Show - more than three times the £80,000 it had budgeted.

Former chief executive Sir Gary Verity resigned in March on health grounds, but later faced complaints about his behaviour and expenses.

It’s clear to me, from reading both reports that governance and strategic oversight of the operations have been largely absent. Financial planning was not robust enough which led to a culture of spend now, worry about it later."

The figure is lower than in the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, whose forces have been told they can recruit 366 and 347 respectively.

Boris Johnson has pledged to hire an extra 20,000 officers by 2022 at a total cost of £1.1bn.

West Yorkshire Police has lost around 1,000 officers since 2010.

Disability hate crimes, including assault, harassment, stalking and malicious communications, are on the rise across England and Wales, the new figures show.

The police force area with the largest number was West Yorkshire with 818, followed by Greater Manchester with 464.

The learning disability charity said the figures were "deeply worrying".

'Leaves on the line' face a chilly reception

A blast of dry ice could be the solution to the bane of all rail commuters' lives - the infamous problem of "leaves on the line", according to researchers in South Yorkshire.

A train blasting dry ice
Network Rail

Every autumn, thousands of tonnes of leaves drop onto Britain's railways tracks which can make the rails slippy and dangerous, according to Network Rail.

Currently, sand is sprayed by trains onto the track to improve grip, but research by the University of Sheffield shows that dry ice could be a better answer.

Sprayed onto the tracks, dry ice leaves behind no residue and improves traction between the wheel and rail.

Trials are currently taking place across the UK.
