If you are joining us: Conservatives lose big in Essex

Doug Faulkner

BBC News Online

The Conservatives have lost control of four councils across Essex.

Chelmsford City Council was the scene of the biggest surprise. The Lib Dems overturned a 45-seat majority to take over the authority.

Southend, Basildon and Tendring fell to no overall control, while Thurrock and Colchester also remained without an outright majority.

There were Conservative holds in Castle Point, Maldon, Epping, Rochford, Brentwood and Braintree.

Harlow stayed under Labour control.

Tendring District Council: No Overall Control gain

The Conservatives have lost control of Tendring District Council as independents made gains.

The authority reduced from 60 seats to 48 at this election.

Conservatives won 16 seats, independents 17, Labour six, UKIP five and the Liberal Democrats two.

The Tories are likely to seek a coalition with some of the independents.

Two seats remain in St Osyth which will be voted for on 23 May after a candidate died.

Delays hit Tendring count

BBC News Online

Tendring District Council's count has been running slightly behind schedule.

Returning officer Ian Davidson told the hall the delay was caused by the late arrival of postal votes.

Some 200 votes were inadvertently sent to Chelmsford and had to be sent on by express delivery.

In Essex 14 councils are holding polls today, with a total of 359 seats up for grabs.

The Conservatives are defending 259 seats, while Labour have just 27 and other parties are defending 74 seats.

Braintree District is one of nine areas in England to be part of a voter identification pilot. The test is only going ahead after a man from Witham failed in his attempt to get the High Court to rule it unlawful.

In Colchester, the Conservatives need just one seat to take control of the council, currently run by a coalition of Liberal Democrats, Labour and Independents.

The Tories could see gains in some wards but lose their leader, who faces a tough battle against the Greens in Castle ward.

Tendring used to be the home of UKIP, which now has just five councillors remaining on the Conservative-run authority. Here the number of seats is reducing from 60 to 48, which could make it harder for the Tories to maintain control.
