Appeal after 65-year-old man slashed in face with knife

CCTV image
Met Police

Police have released a CCTV image of a man they are trying to find after a 65-year-old man was slashed in the face with a knife in Hackney.

The victim had been heading home on 11 April shortly after 20:00 when he was approached from behind by a man and slashed across the face.

The victim's daughter and grandson heard the man's shouts and attempted to chase the attacker but he fled.

Police said there was noting to suggest the 65-year-old man, who required multiple stitches for the wound, and the attacker knew each other.

Det Con Robina Balal said it was "a callous and unnecessary attack on an innocent member of public" and appealed for "anyone who recognises the man in the imagery to come forward and let us know".

Reconstruction of The Theatre

The site of The Theatre was discovered in 2008

People will be able to walk in Shakespeare's footsteps and handle Elizabethan artefacts as part of a festival to celebrate the upcoming opening of the site of the bard's first London theatre.

Built in 1576, The Theatre was one of the first Elizabethan playhouses and an early home for Shakespeare and his company the Lord Chamberlain's Men.

The walking tours will take in the church where the bard worshiped after he moved into the City in the late 1590s

It was where some of the first performances of plays like Romeo and Juliet were held before it was dismantled and relocated south of the river in 1598 to become the Globe.

The original site was discovered in 2008 and is currently being redeveloped but when it opens in spring next year, a permanent exhibition space called the Theatre Courtyard Gallery will be included in the building to display the archaeological finds.

A Tudor goblet was among the items found during excavations at the site

The Shake It Up! festival will feature activities including walking tours, sword fighting demonstrations, Elizabethan yoga and performances and will take place around Shoreditch on Friday and Saturday.

#GreaterLondoner: Rosamund Kissi-Debrah

BBC London

Rosamund Kissi-Debrah
BBC

My daughter became ill very suddenly.

She had an asthma attack, respiratory failure.

Ella was bubbly, happy, determined and clever.

But she died aged seven.

I realised I was powerless.

I wanted to find out why she became ill suddenly and why it was so severe.

We found a correlation between her hospital visits and spikes in air pollution.

But that is yet to be proved and why we’re going to the High Court with a new inquest.

I’m campaigning to raise awareness about the seriousness of asthma and the health impacts of air pollution. I’ve been everywhere from my local library to the World Health Organisation.

Two out of three deaths from asthma could be avoided.

I don’t see any victory when children continue to die.

A victory would be a decline in asthma deaths and we are so far away from that.

I never give up hope. If I thought that nothing would change then I wouldn’t get out of bed.

I will always have my down days. Ella’s birthday, the anniversary of her death.

But knowing that children could be saved keeps me going.

Why should our children continue to suffer?

What is more precious than the life of a child?

Ultimately the air just needs to be clean.

Rosamund Kissi-Debrah, Lewisham

Teenager stabbed in gang fight

Bob Dale

BBC Live reporter

A teenager suffered a knife wound during a fight between two groups of youths.

Police were called to Kingsthorpe Gardens in Addlestone at 20:20 BST on 20 August.

The injured youth was discharged from hospital after receiving three stitches to a cut.

It is likely there is video evidence from mobile phones. It is very possible that this is being shared between young people and I'd ask parents to have a frank conversation with their children to ask if they were there, or if they have been sent videos from the night's events."

Former Championship striker Junior Agogo has reportedly passed away, aged 40.

The Ghanaian striker suffered a stroke back in 2015 which left him debilitated just two years after retiring from playing.

According to a number of reports in Ghana, he passed away in London on Thursday morning.

He suffered a stroke in 2015 and struggled with his speech afterwards, telling a BBC Four documentary in 2017 he felt anxious about his language.

Agogo was a star of the national team and the poster boy of the 2008 African Cup of Nations hosted in Ghana.

He scored 12 goals goals in 27 caps during the height of his career between 2006 and 2009.

Agogo played 39 times for Barnet FC in the 2002/3 season, scoring 19 goals, and went on to play for Bristol Rovers and Nottingham Forest.

Grazing sheep to return to Hampstead Heath after decades

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Sheep will graze freely on the rolling grasslands of Hampstead Heath for the first time in decades.

On Tuesday a small flock of five Oxford Down and Norfolk Horn sheep will be released onto the North London park for a week-long trial.

Their grazing could prove an eco-friendly way of looking after the centuries-old Heath, according to the City of London Corporation, which runs it.

“Grazing is known to play a major role in boosting species-rich wildlife habitats and reducing the use of machinery,” the Corporation said.

“Unlike mowing, grazing produces a mosaic of vegetation heights and types, improving ecological sites for species including amphibians, small mammals, invertebrates and wildflowers.”

Increasing violence at Pentonville Prison, inspectors warn

Violence fuelled by gangs, drugs, debt and "volatile young prisoners" has "increased markedly" at HMP Pentonville, inspectors have warned.

HMP Pentonville
PA Media

An unannounced inspection of HMP Pentonville was unsafe and plans for activities, rehabilitation and release were not good enough and drugs remained "hugely problematic", with more than a quarter (29%) testing positive during a random drug test.

In the last six months there have been 264 assaults on staff and inmates and 61 fights, compared with 196 and 65 respectively during a previous inspection.

The problems were "clear and serious" with the prison failing to meet "undoubtedly great challenges", according to the watchdog's report.

But Chief Inspector of Prisons Peter Clarke said: "The relatively new governor and his senior team "appeared finally to be getting to grips with longstanding problems".

The Victorian jail's four wings - which are largely unchanged since it was built in 1842 - now hold up to 1,310 adult men, with nearly 10% being under 21.

Phil Copple, at the Prison and Probation Service, said: "We are under no illusions as to the scale of the challenge at HMP Pentonville, but I share the inspectors' confidence in this management team and fully expect to see real improvements.
