The weapons surrendered over a two-week period from 20 July include six shotguns, a Browning 9mm pistol and ammunition.

Sgt Pete Moss, of Derbyshire Police, said: "We are pleased with the result of this surrender as it ultimately means that there are 30 fewer weapons in circulation in Derbyshire, which could otherwise get into the wrong hands and be used in criminality in our county and beyond."

Ay up me duck: Sneaky beak at Whaley Bridge repairs

Liam Barnes

BBC News

It's been nice weather for ducks for much of the summer, and two mardy-looking mallards have been inspecting repair works being carried out at Toddbrook Reservoir.

The recent downpours certainly ruffled a few feathers, and none more so than in Whaley Bridge, where 1,500 residents were evacuated over fears the dam could collapse.

The Canal & River Trust confirmed today repairs could take up to three years to finish, but these two couldn't resist sticking their beaks in for an early peek.

Ten measles cases confirmed in region

Sandish Shoker

BBC News

Public Health England (PHE) has said it is currently aware of 10 cases of measles across the East Midlands, including a confirmed case in Loughborough yesterday.

The statistics come as it was revealed 7,000 young children in the region are not fully up-to-date with routine immunisations.

In the UK, the first dose of the MMR vaccine, which protects against Measles, Mumps and Rubella, is given to infants at 12 months and a second dose before school at three years old, which is needed for children to be considered fully protected.

PHE said 2,000 five-year-olds in the region still needed their first dose of the MMR vaccine, leaving them "significantly more at risk" than other pupils.

Meanwhile, thousands more still need their second dose or pre-school booster.

Dr Vanessa MacGregor, from PHE East Midlands, said: "It's a real concern so many young children in our region could be starting school without the full protection that the NHS offers for free."

She said they had particular concerns about children not being protected against measles which had seen outbreaks in the East Midlands in the past year.

A "man-sized" Japanese cloisonne vase has sold for £9,500 at auction in Derbyshire.

The 5ft 8in vase, which was produced between 1868 and 1912, was found in a bungalow in Loughborough.

Auctioneer Adrian Rathbone said: “It's a wonderful result and I'm delighted for our vendor. I received a call one day from the owner requesting a vase valuation.

"I asked if they could pop over to our auction centre with it but they said it was a bit too big.

“It belonged to the owner’s late mother who bought it at a country house sale in the 1950s."

The piece was bought by a phone bidder at Hansons Auctioneers on Monday.

Fish farmers talk about Whaley Bridge evacuation

Alex Regan

BBC News

The 1,500 residents who were evacuated from Whaley Bridge have returned home since concerns about the dam's wall.

But some of the fishy residents of Toddbrook Reservoir have been permanently relocated by the "fish emergency service".

Calverton Fish Farm in Nottinghamshire helped relocate "a few thousand" fish from the reservoir, as the emergency services drained the water.

View more on twitter

Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham, team leader Alan Henshaw said: "The call was they were going to completely empty the reservoir, that's why we were called."

The team used a vehicle with a fish tank on the back of it to move the fish, which were captured by large nets in the reservoir.

The fish that were relocated were taken to Bittell Reservoirs in Worcestershire.

He added: "The decision was [eventually] made to leave some water in the bottom, so the majority of fish are still in the [Toddbrook] reservoir."
