Grandmother named as M6 crash victim

Police say the woman who died in a crash on the M6 at the weekend was heading back to Manchester after taking two of her grandchildren for a weekend in Cumbria.

Martina Taylor, 62, died when her motorhome was in collision with a car on the southbound M6 near Carlisle, on Saturday.

The two children were slightly injured.

In a tribute released through police, her family said: "She was much loved by her mum and siblings and leaves behind a devastated family, including three children, five grandchildren and friends.”

Yorkshire Ripper hoaxer Wearside Jack dies

The man who hoaxed detectives by claiming to be the Yorkshire Ripper has died, police have confirmed.

John Humble
BBC

John Humble, who was dubbed Wearside Jack, sent police on a wild goose chase when he sent them hoax letters and an audio tape in the late 1970s.

He was unmasked in 2006 and sentenced to eight years in jail after admitting perverting the course of justice.

West Yorkshire Police detectives, headed by the force's assistant chief constable George Oldfield, believed the letters and tape were genuine and diverted resources to Humble's home town of Sunderland.

When Humble was eventually prosecuted, Leeds Crown Court heard claims that delays caused by the hoax allowed Peter Sutcliffe to murder three more women.

Northumbria Police said Humble, who had changed his name to John Samuel Anderson, died on 30 July.

Humble, 63, died at his home in South Shields, where he had lived since being released from prison in 2009. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Sutcliffe was jailed in 1981 and given 20 life sentences for killing 13 women and attempting to kill seven more.

Ten measles cases confirmed in region

Sandish Shoker

BBC News

Public Health England (PHE) has said it is currently aware of 10 cases of measles across the East Midlands, including a confirmed case in Loughborough yesterday.

The statistics come as it was revealed 7,000 young children in the region are not fully up-to-date with routine immunisations.

In the UK, the first dose of the MMR vaccine, which protects against Measles, Mumps and Rubella, is given to infants at 12 months and a second dose before school at three years old, which is needed for children to be considered fully protected.

PHE said 2,000 five-year-olds in the region still needed their first dose of the MMR vaccine, leaving them "significantly more at risk" than other pupils.

Meanwhile, thousands more still need their second dose or pre-school booster.

Dr Vanessa MacGregor, from PHE East Midlands, said: "It's a real concern so many young children in our region could be starting school without the full protection that the NHS offers for free."

She said they had particular concerns about children not being protected against measles which had seen outbreaks in the East Midlands in the past year.

West Yorkshire rail upgrade on track

More details have been released about plans to upgrade part of the rail line between Leeds and Manchester as part of a £2.9bn upgrade by Network Rail.

Huddersfield Station
Tim Glover/Geograph

The upgrade looks at the TransPennine line between Huddersfield and Dewsbury and could see more rail lines, station revamps and the electrification of the line.

It will mean that four lines will run on the eight-mile stretch, allowing more trains to travel on that section of track.

Huddersfield, Deighton, Mirfield and Ravensthorpe stations will get "major upgrades", according to Network Rail.

Work could start in 2022 following a decision being made by the government.

The body of 49-year-old Tracy Knott, from Kirkheaton, was recovered after police were called to water near Brixham's Freshwater Quarry car park, in Torbay, early on 11 August.

'Man-sized' vase found in bungalow sells for £9,500

Alex Regan

BBC News

A "man-sized" Japanese cloisonne vase has sold for £9,500 at auction in Derbyshire.

The 5ft 8in vase, which was produced between 1868 and 1912, was found in a bungalow in Loughborough.

Auctioneer Adrian Rathbone said: “It's a wonderful result and I'm delighted for our vendor. I received a call one day from the owner requesting a vase valuation.

"I asked if they could pop over to our auction centre with it but they said it was a bit too big.

“It belonged to the owner’s late mother who bought it at a country house sale in the 1950s."

The piece was bought by a phone bidder at Hansons Auctioneers on Monday.
