Deadline looms for government-matched flood money

A government pledge to match donations to a fundraising appeal for those affected by flooding in South Yorkshire in November will come to an end on Friday.

Hundreds of people were forced from their homes when heavy rain led to flooding across the county last year, with parts of Doncaster and the village of Fishlake among the worst hit areas.

An appeal was launched by South Yorkshire's Community Foundation to raise money for people who had been displaced.

The government said it would match £1 for £1 any money donated, with almost £600,000 raised so far.

But the foundation says money will only be matched until 28 February.

Flood warnings issued as snow and rain fall on Yorkshire

More than 20 flood warnings are in place across Yorkshire this morning as heavy rain and snow is falling on much of the county.

BBC

The Met Office has also issued a yellow weather warning for rain and snow for much of the region between 02:00 and 15:00.

Most of the flood warnings are for North Yorkshire, with 10 of them covering the York area.

Over the weekend, parts of Yorkshire were flooded for the third successive weekend, following Storms Ciara and Dennis earlier in the month.

However the EA says it is "quietly comfortable" about the risk of flooding

Frank Deplanter, from the Environment Agency, said flood defences were protecting about 2,000 properties in York.

He said the River Ouse would peak at a similar level seen during Storm Dennis last weekend with some flooding for the "usual suspects".

Doncaster flooding cost council £650,000 - Report

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Devastating floods which hit Doncaster cost the council over £650,000 to respond to the situation and deal with the aftermath, a new report says.

Flooding in Fishlake
AFP

The report seen by councillors details the impact of the November floods which hit several communities in the borough such as Bentley, Fishlake, and Conisbrough.

The area had a month’s rainfall in just one day which led to 51 road closures, 1,200 homeowners being advised to evacuate their properties and the council receiving 2,000 calls to its emergency helpline.

Figures also show 80,000 sandbags were issued and 700 properties were flooded or deemed "unlivable".

The flood recovery and response has cost the council about £650,000, the report suggests.

Public transport body 'no longer fit for purpose' - Mayor

While South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) does its best to mitigate cuts by operators, a "complete rethink" is needed, Dan Jarvis has said.

Mr Jarvis' comments come in a letter responding to a Sheffield councillor about cancelled services in Stannington.

Mr Jarvis also said he found late-running services and cancellations "frustrating and infuriating" and that the sale of First Bus had complicated the process.

In his letter, he said he continued to make the case to national government for further investment in South Yorkshire's bus services.

"For far too long, we’ve had more of the executive than the passenger. A complete rethink is required," he added.

Sheffield South East MP Clive Betts is currently carrying out a review of South Yorkshire’s buses, with a report expected to be published in the spring.

SYPTE has been contacted for a comment by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

Storm Dennis: Rain and wind set to bring travel disruption

Disruption to transport is expected as heavy rain and strong winds are set to batter the UK for a second consecutive weekend.

Network Rail advised passengers to expect disruption on many routes due to flooding and allow more time for their journeys.

Passenger director Jake Kelly said: "Storm Ciara dumped a month-and-a-half of rain on us last weekend, leaving ground waterlogged and rivers swollen.

"We had a lot of flooding in the North West and a lot of it disrupted the railway, for example at Todmorden and Caldew near Carlisle.

"With Storm Dennis set to bring more high winds and further rainfall this Saturday and Sunday, we're preparing for more of the same."

Meanwhile the AA is urging motorists to take extra care.

Patrolman Ben Sheridan said: "The forecast looks bleak across the UK with warnings for wind and heavy rain which will significantly reduce visibility on the roads.

"For those who are braving the storm, drivers should make sure they account for the conditions. Slow down, allow for greater stopping distances and watch out for potential hazards."

Storm Dennis: Power suppliers 'ready' for disruption

Electricity supplier Northern Powergrid says it has taken steps to prepare for the heavy rain and wind forecast to hit the region this weekend.

Storm Dennis is expected to bring heavy rain and winds of up to 70mph across parts of Yorkshire.

Rod Gardner, from Northern Powergrid, said: “We have teams of extra engineers ready to monitor any flooding impacts, restore power and carry out repairs if there is damage to our network as a result of the severe weather conditions expected.

"Our specialist access equipment and fleet of 4x4 vehicles are ready to assist should the forecast rain make travel and site access difficult.

"We also have teams of arborists on standby to help with any fallen trees that may damage our network or need to be removed to enable repairs."

Yorkshire councils left to foot £2.5m fly-tipping bill

Yorkshire and the Humber is the third worst region in the country for fly-tipping, according to research by the BBC.

Fly-tipping in Barnsley
Kevin Osborne

There were more than 28,000 incidents of fly-tipping between 2012 and 2019, research from the BBC Shared Data Unit found.

The clean up comes at a cost of nearly £2.5m with incidents rising since 2012.

In 2018-2019, there were more than 5,500 incidents of fly-tipping, according to the data, with Leeds being the worst place in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The rise of large fly-tipping incidents across England is being blamed on organised gangs, with fake companies hiring out buildings to dump waste.

It follows a period late last year when the operator returned the worst performance figures in the country.

Transport for the North, which advises the Government on northern England's transport needs, says TPE must now build back trust and deliver a service that's punctual and reliable.

The transport body added that the new £500m fleet of trains are welcome with the extra capacity "much needed" but service levels must be maintained as they're brought in.

Leo Goodwin, Managing Director for TransPennine Express said: “We absolutely agree that our customers should benefit from improved performance.

"We have been very open about the fact that this was nowhere near good enough before Christmas and we have apologised to our customers for this."

What HS2 means for Yorkshire explained by Spencer Stokes, BBC Yorkshire's business correspondent.

Call for public ownership of trains following HS2 approval

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has called for public ownership of trains following the Prime Minister's announcement the HS2 rail project will go ahead.

Jeremy Corbyn
Parliament TV

Mr Johnson told MPs earlier his government had the "guts to take the decision" to deliver prosperity across the country, by completing the high speed rail link connecting London to Birmingham, and on to Manchester and Leeds.

Jeremy Corbyn said: "HS2 must be developed with more sensitivity to local communities and the environment, particularly regarding the impact it will have on woodlands.

"And if it is to have public support the fares on HS2 must be affordable. Can the prime minister tell us where the trains will be built? Will those jobs and training be in this country?

"When will the Prime Minister match the £2.5bn commitment to upgrade the Great Western Mainline on our only train line into the South West?

"We believe the case is now unanswerable that our railways should be publicly owned and run to improve the service and cut fares by 33%."

The main HS2 route is due to join the existing rail network in North Yorkshire at Church Fenton.
