A cancer patient from Wetheral has become the first person to be treated with a revolutionary new procedure at the Christie hospital in Manchester.
Carol Livesey, 61, who has now moved to Chorley, was diagnosed with lymphoma in March 2018 but after both chemotherapy and radiotherapy failed, was referred for a treatment called CAR-T.
CAR-T involves removing immune cells and modifying them in a laboratory in the USA so they can recognise cancer cells and kill them.
Carol said that she was a little anxious, because all new procedures came with risks, but excited to be put forward for such ground-breaking treatment.
Emerging data suggests that CAR-T treatment can lead to durable remissions in a significant proportion of patients.”
