Copter pilot's action avoids drone near-miss 'disaster'

A drone being flown within 3m of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA) helicopter almost caused the "most unthinkable disaster", the charity has said.

The helicopter was returning to the YAA base at Nostell Air Support Unit near Wakefield at about 18:50 yesterday when the pilot had to avoid a "direct collision".

The drone was being flown at about 1,300ft, which is more than three times the legal limit for operators, according to the YAA.

Steve Waudby, YAA chief pilot, said: “We cannot stress enough the seriousness of what happened last night. The consequences don’t bear thinking about if a direct strike had occurred.

"Whether the operator is aware or not, they have put the lives of our crew in extreme danger."

YAA staff had spent most of yesterday working with the Civil Aviation Authority creating a drone awareness film, the charity added.

Watch: Homophobic hate crime charges fall as reports soar

Fewer people are being prosecuted for homophobic hate crime, despite police calling on victims to come forward.

A BBC Radio 5 Live investigation found the numbers of people reporting such crimes across the UK more than doubled in the last five years to more than 13,000.

Charges or court summons fell by 10% during the same period.

Lily Cherry, from Woodseats in Sheffield, spoke to the BBC about her experiences:

Reports of homophobic hate crime rise in Yorkshire

The rise in the number of reports of homophobic hate crimes to two of Yorkshire's police forces are among the most dramatic in the country, figures suggest.

It comes as new figures show fewer people are being prosecuted despite rising numbers of potential victims coming forward.

West Yorkshire Police has seen reports increase from 172 to 961 over the past five years, while South Yorkshire police has seen reports rise from 73 to 375.

Angela Williams, of West Yorkshire Police, said rising reports were in part down to "improvements in the way we record crime and the fact that many victims have the confidence to come forward".

The proportion of crimes resulting in a charge or summons, however, fell over the same time, from 19% to 4% in West Yorkshire and from 10% to 3% in South Yorkshire.

Across the UK as a whole recorded reports of homophobic abuse increased from 5,807 in 2014-15, to 13,530 in 2018-19.

But during the same period, the number of prosecutions fell from 1,157 to 1,058 - from 20% of all reports to 8%.

The National Police Chiefs' Council said those cases often involved a lack of witnesses and evidence.

Fire crew cuts 'could be reversed if finances improve'

Local Democracy Reporting Service

A move to cut fire crew numbers in South Yorkshire is being recommended to go ahead but with a promise the move will be reversed if finances improve.

A South Yorkshire Fire engine
Local Democracy Reporting Service

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has proposed a drop from five to four crew members on each engine as part of plans to save £4m.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority are now being asked to approve the change when they meet on Monday.

A report to be considered by fire authority members states four person crews are used by "at least 17 other fire and rescue services nationwide" but adds that the measure is "is easily reversible if the service’s funding situation improves".

The Fire Bridges Union has previously said said the changes will affect safety.

Firefighters to be given extra mental health help

Firefighters in South Yorkshire will have specialist help put in place following traumatic incidents, the fire service has announced.

It's being done to "ditch stigmas and change the culture around mental illness", according to South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire crews who deal with traumatic incidents will be offered support from specialists from the British Red Cross and a 24/7 telephone counselling scheme has been launched for staff.

We already offered lots of support to our staff, but it’s only right that we look to continually review and update the support we offer, adopting learning from other sectors and making our organisation the best it can possibly be as a place of work.”

The next-generation lithium ion batteries could see electric vehicles go further as the technology advances.

Researchers and collaborators at the University of Sheffield have been awarded £11m to develop the batteries which could be used to transform the performance of electric vehicles.

The batteries must have longer lifespans and increased energy density to increase the range of electric vehicles.

BBC 'pays £2m' to settle Sir Cliff Richard case

Sir Cliff Richard has reached a final settlement after his legal action against the BBC, which will pay a reported £2m towards his legal costs.

Last year, the star won a privacy case against the broadcaster over its coverage of a police raid on his home.

South Yorkshire Police officers were investigating an allegation made by a man who claimed he was sexually assaulted by Sir Cliff in 1985 in Sheffield.

But the singer was never arrested or charged and the case was dropped two years later.

The BBC was ordered to pay £210,000 in damages, and later agreed to pay £850,000 to cover legal costs.

However, that figure has since increased. The BBC said the case had now reached its "conclusion".

A BBC spokesperson said: "We are pleased Sir Cliff Richard, the BBC and South Yorkshire Police have reached an amicable settlement of Sir Cliff Richard's legal costs. The BBC's costs are within the scope of our legal insurance."

However, the settlement will not fully cover the star's legal fees. During his trial, the 78-year-old singer said he had spent more than £3m to clear his name.

The figures, obtained by the multi-agency Rape Monitoring Group, show more than 3,500 rapes were reported against females aged 16 and over, in 2017/18.

They also show about 645 girls and 293 boys aged under 13-years-old reported being raped during the 12-month period to the end of March 2018.

Across England and Wales overall number of rapes reported to police rose by almost 13,000 to 54,045.

Wendy Williams, chair of the group, said: “Rape is one of the most serious crimes dealt with by the criminal justice system.

"It's vital information and statistics about rape are made as transparent as possible, so that agencies can refine prevention strategies and give victims the justice they deserve.

“We hope today’s data will help police, prosecutors, and the entire system, to improve their work to provide justice for victims."
