'We bought a pub for our 12-year-old son'

Ben, 12, uses a wheelchair - he also loves live music, so his parents bought him a pub.
In a week where a tweet about a London pub went viral after a member of staff told a customer “we don’t serve disabled people”, meet the Mathies.

Ben Mathie loves live music but venue options are limited because he’s only 12-years-old and uses a wheelchair and venues are often inaccessible.

He was a regular at gigs in the local pub, The Harrow Inn Freehouse in Bootle, Nottinghamshire, before plans were made to shut it down.

Then, in an unexpected move to save Ben's favourite venue, his mum and dad gave up their farm shop and took over the pub.

Ben now has the important role of Events Manager and books all the live acts at the pub to ensure it’s as inclusive and welcoming as possible.

More funding for town and village knife crime

It may be seen as a greater issue in the city of Nottingham but the rest of the county isn't immune to the problem.

Last October the county council published a wide ranging plan with a strong emphasis on education, early intervention and youth engagement.

Councillors are now due to agree one-off funding of £300,000 to recruit four youth workers to work with youngsters deemed to be at the greatest risk of becoming involved with serious crime; either as perpetrators or victims.

The new posts, though, would only be temporary - with the cash-strapped council still to identify funding for the longer term.

There has been a sharp rise recently in both the number of schools issuing fines and the total number of penalty notices issued in Nottinghamshire, reflecting a similar trend nationally.

Most of the penalty notices were paid but about 8% weren't and led to court action. The maximum possible sentence is three months in prison, or a £2,500 fine.

A report considered by councillors yesterday doesn't list the punishments handed out by the courts.

The council describes the fines as "proportionate" with the overall number of absences steadily falling.

Details of A614's £18m upgrade

Kit Sandeman

Local Democracy Reporter

One of the busiest routes in Nottinghamshire will see six key pinch points upgraded in a multi-million pound scheme.

Last year, the government announced £18m would be spent on the A614 and the A6097.

Described as the "spine of the county" the routes jointly go from the south to the north of Nottinghamshire.

New details have been revealed for how the funding will be spent, with the majority going on six junctions and islands which cause the worst snarl-ups.

From south to north, the junctions are: Lowdham Roundabout; Warren Hill Junction (where the A6097 and A614 join); White Post Roundabout; Mickledale Lane Junction and Deerdale Lane Junction (both near Bilsthorpe) and Ollerton Roundabout.

M1 smart motorway upgrade cost £125m

Kevin Stanley

Reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

Highways England has invested more than £125m upgrading a section of the M1 to a smart motorway.

It allows variable speed limits to be used on the section between Junctions 23a and Junction 25, which helps to adjust the flow of traffic to ease congestion.

Sensors by the side of the road work out when vehicles are slowing down, and signs above the carriageway change the mandatory speed limits accordingly.

Highways England monitors motorways and trunk roads from a series of regional control centres. Its operators can trigger various aspects of the smart motorway, including “Red X” instructions, which close one or more lanes at a time.
