Fewer free hearing aids could be handed out

Shropshire's health commissioners are considering reducing the number of free hearing aids it hands out.

The chair of the clinical commissioning group, Dr Julian Povey said it was "looking long and hard" at the contract to supply the hearing aids and may follow the lead of north Staffordshire, where hearing aids are no longer given to people with mild hearing loss.

Dr Povey, who uses a hearing aid himself, promised "we will do things ideally where they will improve patient care", but admitted "we're reaching the point where not everything we do may improve patient care, it may restrict patient care".

The CCG, which is due to merge with the CCG for Telford, has forecast a cumulative deficit of £99.5m by the end of this financial year.

Steam railway gets 'fantastic' filming opportunity

Andy Giddings

BBC News

Part of the Severn Valley Railway is going to be closed to visitors early next week to allow filming to take place.

The railway isn't saying what the filming is for, but is describing it as "a fantastic contract opportunity" and "a significant opportunity to contribute to the railway’s future".

It says talks have been going on for some while, but the deal has only been confirmed this month.

Bracelet designed by an expectant mother could help reduce stillbirth
Pregnant women are given bracelets to tackle their anxieties and record their baby's movements.

Creator of baby movement bracelet found it 'reassuring'

BBC Shropshire

A Shropshire mum who developed a bracelet for counting baby movements during pregancy says she found it reassuring to be able to keep track of them on busy days.

The bracelets are now being given to all pregnant women in Shropshire after 24 weeks, and mums-to-be are asked to move a small hoop around each bead when they notice a movement.

Louise Macleod said she decided to create the prototype herself because she couldn't find an easy way to keep count and "it helped me notice patterns of movement I don’t think I would have otherwise have found".

She said that once her baby was born, she used the bracelet to remind her which side she was feeding her son from.

The hospitals in Shrewsbury and Telford say it's important that changes in a baby's movement are reported as soon as possible.

Baby movement bracelet aims to reduce stillbirths

BBC Midlands Today

Thousands of pregnant women in Shropshire are to be given bracelets to record their baby's movements in the hope of reducing stillbirths.

The bracelet being worn
BBC

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) says there are 14 beads on it and expectant mums move a small hoop around each of them when they feel movement.

By doing that, the trust says they should find it easier to track their baby's movement pattern, know when to expect movement and report any concerns earlier.

It comes as the county's hospitals are being investigated over avoidable baby deaths since 1998.

Last month, NHS Improvement said it had asked for details of hundreds more cases but they were not necessarily the result of sub-standard care.
