Turnout in the South East was 39.36% - up from 35.4% in 2014.

The South East region is made up of the Isle of Wight, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Schools warned after boy approached by man in street

Police are carrying out patrols and speaking to schools after a boy was approached by a man he did not know in Shirley in Southampton.

The man stopped his car and spoke to the 12-year-old, who was walking along St Edmund’s Road, shortly after 16:00 BST on Wednesday.

He was driving a dark coloured car with tinted windows and is described as dark skinned.

Officers are treating it as a suspicious incident and have also been speaking to parents and children at local schools.

European elections 2019: Polls take place

Voters are heading to the polls for the European Parliament elections.

Seventy-three members, known as MEPs, will be elected in nine constituencies in England, and one each in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Each region has a different number of representatives based on its population, with 10 MEPs in the South East.

Polling stations in the UK are open from 07:00 until 22:00.

The results will be announced once all EU nations have voted, with the voting process expected to be completed by 22:00 on Sunday.

Two injured in Southampton flat fire

Two people were injured after a fire broke out in a first-floor flat in Southampton.

A man and a woman in their 60s were treated for minor injuries at Southampton General Hospital following two explosions at the property in Lincoln Court on Monday evening.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service sent four pumps and an aerial appliance when they were called to reports of an explosion at 19:29 BST.

A Dorset project to help victims of domestic abuse is to be extended.

The Dragonfly project uses the symbol of a dragonfly to show people in an abusive situation where they can find confidential support and advice.

The project trains people to become champions within communities. They're able to receive and respond to disclosures of domestic violence and abuse.

Funding has now been secured to continue the Dragonfly project in Dorset and to extend it to Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and West Sussex.

Former MP to become county council leader

Conservatives on Hampshire County Council have elected a former MP as their new leader.

Keith Mans is set to take over as the leader of the Tory-controlled authority at its annual meeting on 17 May.

The former RAF officer was the MP for Wyre in Lancashire between 1987 and 1997.

He will take over from Councillor Roy Perry, who became council leader in 2013.

'Ditch plastic today', charity urges

A Hampshire-based charity is marking Sir David Attenborough's 93rd birthday by urging people to ditch plastic for the day.

Final Straw Solent is encouraging schools, businesses and individuals to refuse all single-use plastic today to help make people aware of just how much plastic they use.

The charity, which is also campaigning for stricter legislation around plastic packaging and recycling, said it hoped it would encourage people to make long-term lifestyle changes to reduce plastic use.
