Paddling pools added to sports centres review

A review of sports centres in Brighton and Hove will include four outdoor paddling pools.

All seven sports centres and the paddling pools are run by Freedom Leisure, a not-for-profit leisure trust, on behalf of Brighton and Hove City Council.

The 10-year contract expires at the end of March 2021 although it could be extended for five years.

The review will inform decisions about where money is spent on upgrades and makeovers – and how much – in the coming years.

A report to the council’s tourism, development and culture committee said: “Freedom Leisure have not been able to achieve their predicted financial targets during the course of the current contract.

“Consequently it is likely there would be a financial pressure on the council if the existing arrangements were continued.”

Decisions about what happens next are unlikely to be made until the review has been completed.

Homes for bees in new buildings

Bee block
Brighton and Hove City Council

Builders and developers are being urged to use bee bricks in any new buildings in Brighton and Hove from September.

Bee bricks give solitary bees such as the non-aggressive red mason and leaf cutters a place to lay their eggs, councillors were told.

Once the bees have found a place to lay their eggs, they seal the entrance with mud and chewed-up vegetation, with the offspring emerging the following spring when the cycle starts again.

The change won unanimous cross-party backing at a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council tourism, development and culture committee on Thursday.

The committee was told that a planning condition requiring bee bricks in all suitable properties could be in place by the start of September.

The committee also received an update on a proposed change to planning policy to encourage developers to include swift boxes in their schemes to protect the endangered birds.

Research is under way and a further report is expected when the committee next meets in September.

Waters receding at New Road

Sussex 255 v Worcestershire 14-2 - lunch

While they're at lunch at Chester Road, Kidderminster, on the second day of Worcestershire's rescheduled game with Sussex, things are now looking a little brighter 15 miles away back at county headquarters, at New Road.

It has stopped raining, the River Severn has now reached its peak, the waters are starting to recede and the clean-up operation has begun in parts of the ground.

Ged Scott - BBC Sport

On past experience, it usually takes three weeks to get the place ready for cricket again after a New Road flood, which would wipe out next week's one-day game against Australia A, on 25 June.

But the next home game after that, the Championship fixture against Derbyshire on 7 July, at least looks a reasonable target.

The club are yet to comment on how long they expect to be at Kidderminster this time.
