Decision on green-belt development delayed

A decision on whether to build up to 3,000 homes on green-belt land near Tong has been put back until May.

Shropshire councillors had been due to discuss the principle of developing the land, just off junction three of the M54, on 12 February.

The council said it was "in light of further recent evidence published by the Black Country authorities regarding their ability to meet their own housing and employment needs".

Shropshire Council previously said the development was being considered with the needs of neighbouring authorities in mind.

But the idea appeared to be dead in December last year after those authorities failed to follow up their interest.

At that time, Shropshire Council Conservative leader Peter Nutting said the development was "very unlikely" to go ahead.

Health and wellbeing programme faces £600k overspend

A health and wellbeing programme set up to take pressure off hospitals and social care services in Telford is expected to go over budget by £600,000.

The Telford and Wrekin Better Care Fund has a budget of nearly £24m and is jointly run by the council and the clinical commissioning group.

A report for the borough's health and wellbeing board said the 2.5% overspend was caused by demand for care beds and the council and CCG said they would absorb the costs equally.

Better care funds were established by the government in 2013 and the council and CCG have collaborated in Telford and Wrekin since 2017.

Its aim is to prevent admissions into hospital, support residents to live well and reduce the dependency on services.

There are 35,000 complaints in the system and the council's contractor Kier is being scrutinised over its working practices.

Councillors have raised concerns over the company's work.

Steve Davenport, the councillor in charge of roads, said the new role would cost about £130,000 for six months, but it would be money well spent.

"It's all down to doing more for less - we know there are better ways of doing it and we've just got to get there," he said.

The majority of the car parks in Telford are free and will remain free, but the council will collect fines from people parking illegally on the road.

Mayor calls for more rail improvements

BBC WM

The West Midlands Mayor says, although performance on West Midlands Trains has improved, it is still far from good enough.

The firm runs the under-fire West Midlands Railway routes as well the London Northwestern operator.

Andy Street is threatening to recommend it loses its Midlands franchise if there aren't improvements by the end of this month.

Transport Focus' latest figures put the operator in the bottom five for satisfaction nationally with about three quarters of commuters satisfied with the rail firm's performance.

"I know there is still huge, huge concern and 'fed-up-ness', if that is the word, over this," he said.

"If we decide not ask for the franchise to be removed now, let's be clear, they are not in any way off the watch list.

"And I will need to discuss with the Secretary of State for Transport what is an appropriate way of keeping them very firmly on that watch list to make they continue to deliver improvement."

The zoo previously hit the headlines as it was forced to fill its new penguin enclosure with models, as a shortage of birds meant it was unable to get the real thing.

In the post, the zoo said: "We will continue to use the site which has seen much development and investment to make it a beautiful, engaging and educational place for our non profit community work, community education programs, animal assisted therapy and interventions and private education experiences, but no longer offer public entry as a zoo."

The history of coracles in Shropshire could be marked with a statue if the idea's given planning permission.

Ironbridge Coracle Trust

The Ironbridge Coracle Trust wants to place the six-foot steel structure in a flowerbed outside the Museum of the Gorge.

Their plans say the monument, of a coracle man carrying one of the boats, would have an "attractive, rust-like appearance".

Telford and Wrekin's planning department will make a decision at a future date.

Coracles are thought to date back to pre-Roman times and the small, round-shaped, lightweight boats were traditionally used along areas like Shropshire and the Welsh borders.
