Door staff get marker spray to deter troublemakers

Nightclub bouncers in South Yorkshire are being given special marker dye by police to try to to cut down on violent customers.

South Yorkshire Police

Smartwater canisters will be used by door staff working at pubs and clubs across the county.

The dye shows up under ultra-violet light and contains a unique code number which allows police to link offenders to a particular incident.

Police said the rollout comes after a trial in Sheffield.

Dave Andrews, whose firm provides door staff to hundreds of venues across South Yorkshire, said the six-month Sheffield trial had shown the spray was a "fantastic visual deterrent".

"We have had incidents where problems are bubbling at front doors of venues, but on seeing, or being told about SmartWater, situations are quickly diffused," he said.

South Yorkshire Police said more than 70 door staff working across Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley had undergone specialist training.

Supt Lee Berry said the spray would only be used "in serious incidents".

Labour launches 'regional manifestos' in England

Labour has promised an "investment blitz" across England to bring "wealth, power and prosperity" to communities.

    Shadow chancellor John McDonnell
    PA Media

The party launched regional manifestos for each part of the country on Friday, including pledges on transport, housing and jobs.

Each manifesto outlines plans for individual regions, with most of the pledges to be paid for by Labour's £250bn Green Transformation Fund - a pot of money raised through borrowing it promises to spend on projects to improve sustainability.

The pledges impacting on Yorkshire include:

    • Northern Powerhouse Rail - improving connections between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull, and Newcastle, and cutting journey times
    • Nine plastics remanufacture and recycling sites - one for each region

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said the announcement would "bring our country back together".

But Tory minister Jake Berry said it was "a clear distraction from Corbyn's failure to set out a Brexit plan".

Hillsborough police chief cleared of manslaughter

Mr Duckenfield, of Ferndown, Dorset, was in charge of the FA Cup semi-final at which 96 Liverpool fans died.

Due to the law at the time, there can be no prosecution over the death of the 96th victim, Tony Bland.

This is because he died more than a year and a day after his injuries were caused.

Long '101' police wait times despite new £12m system

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Despite £12m being spent to speed up the police "101" call service in South Yorkshire, people are again waiting longer on the line, it's emerged.

    BBC

A new non-emergency "Smart Connect" system was introduced a year ago and there was a big drop in waiting times for callers, but in recent months the delay has worsened, according to South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner.

Dr Alan Billings told a public meeting in Barnsley that demand remained high and the 101 service was too often being used for issues the police can do nothing about.

He said: "You would be astonished at how many there are. We have somehow got to educate people not to make these sorts of calls."

Areas like Bentley and Fishlake were affected by flooding when the River Don overtopped, leading to homes being evacuated.

At its peak, the Environment Agency says it and its partners had 55 pumps in operation, pumping 15 tonnes of water every second - the equivalent of filling Wembley Stadium every day.

Most areas have now gone back to normal, with river levels and flood plains being at their usual "winter level".

Yorkshire Air Ambulance withdraws Prince Andrew connection

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance service (YAA) has become the latest charity to withdraw its connection to the Duke of York.

    Prince Andrew
    EPA

The YAA said "staff, volunteer and donor opinion" had led to the move by its trustee board.

It follows Prince Andrew's appearance on BBC Newsnight and the controversy over his ties to the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The duke opened the air ambulance base at Nostell in 2015.

For several months the duke had been facing questions over his ties to US financier Epstein, who took his own life in August while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's accusers, claimed she was forced to have sex with the prince three times.

The duke has always denied any form of sexual contact or relationship with her.

YAA said: "As a charity funded by public donations, we must seriously consider the opinions of our donors and supporters, this has been a significant factor in reaching this decision."

The University of Huddersfield has also said the prince would step down as chancellor.
