Analysis: Friday 13th is day Labour will never forget

The ballot boxes and tables have been put away at the Leeds Arena ready for tonight’s gig, a nostalgic night called We Love the Nineties.

Yorkshire Labour supporters might be forgiven for desperately hoping they could go back to victories like 1997.

Saying Labour did badly here doesn’t really cut it. People in parts of Rotherham and Doncaster now have a Conservative MP for the first time in their constituency’s history.

The West Yorkshire seats we talk about being an indication of the national election picture were always going to be tough. Four of them went.

But further south, three more communities kicked Labour out.

Rother Valley is made of former mining villages. It’s been Labour since 1918.

Don Valley surrounds the town where railway workers created the Labour movement.

Half of Penistone and Stocksbridge only exists because it was formed around the steelworks.

These are Labour areas. But not anymore.

This Brexit election turned things around. The view here on the Labour leadership also made the party feel less connected to its roots.

The 12 December election returned results on a Friday the 13th the party will never forget.

General election 2019: The national picture

We've been focusing on the local picture so far, but here's a quick look at what's been happening nationally.

  • Exit polls suggest the Conservatives will win an overall majority of 86
  • 11 seats have been declared so far - nine Labour and two Conservative

Could West Yorkshire be the key to No 10?

Kevin Larkin

Political reporter, BBC Radio Leeds

West Yorkshire is normally full of closely fought contests and this election is no exception.

The seats along the M62 corridor have often proved to be important in shaping governments in past elections and in 2019 watch out for places like Colne Valley, Dewsbury and Wakefield to get a flavour of which way the political wind is blowing.

If the election is the Brexit election, as the Conservatives hope it will be, then what will happen to two of the prime movers in efforts to prevent a no deal Brexit in their West Yorkshire seats - Hilary Benn in Leeds Central and Yvette Cooper in Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford.

But the NHS is likely to play a key role, especially after the story about the four-year-old boy pictured lying on coats in the Leeds General Infirmary A&E made national headlines.

Labour will be hoping that those problems at the LGI can help them in Leeds marginals like Pudsey and Morley & Outwood, where Conservative candidates Stuart Andrew and Andrea Jenkyns are defending slim majorities.

Meanwhile, The Lib Dems will be hoping they can win back Leeds North West with their strident opposition to Brexit, while the Greens will be hoping concern about the climate emergency declared by all West Yorkshire councils can help them win support.

The Yorkshire Party is hoping it can capitalise on the North/South divide as well as a good dose of Yorkshire pride.

One way or another, the election battle in West Yorkshire will be a key part of the national story.

Farm buildings across the National Park were surveyed and recorded from 2011 - but the park boundary was extended in 2016 to include the Westmorland Dales.

First Pacers leave Northern rail network

The first of Northern's fleet of 102 Pacer trains have been taken off the rail network, the operator has said.

The outdated trains, many of which have been running for 35 years, were due to be taken out of use by 2020.

But, with just a few weeks of the year left, only three trains have been retired.

The much-maligned trains will continue to be retired and then scrapped over the coming months, with "a handful" remaining.

Northern, which covers the North West, North East, Midlands and Yorkshire, has said 101 brand new trains will join their fleet as part of a £600m investment.

Calderdale rail disruption 'until end of day'

Disruption to rail services in Calderdale is now expected to last "until the end of the day", according to train operator Northern.

The problems are due to Network Rail engineering works which have overrun.

There are also problems on the Rochdale-Todmorden route due to an "incident" which is expected to be dealt with by about 10:00.
