London's Crossrail project will probably go even further over budget, according to a report by MPs.

Commuters have been "let down" by a programme that is well behind schedule, the Public Accounts Committee said.

MPs said they were "sceptical" about the Department for Transport's "ability to oversee major rail projects".

In response, the Department for Transport said it had acted "swiftly and effectively" when problems at Crossrail became clear.

Detectives hunting a man wanted in connection with a murder in Acton are offering a £20,000 reward.

Polish national Patryk Makuch, 34, is wanted in connection with the murder of Kamil Malysz in January.

It is thought Mr Makuch has travelled to Europe and a European Arrest Warrant has been obtained.

Police were called to a flat in Alfred Road, Acton on 27 January at 10:15 and 34-year-old Mr Malysz, also a Polish national, was found dead at the scene.

The cause of death was harmorrhaging due to a stab injury.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin, said: “Kamil Malysz was stabbed to death and his family are dealing with his tragic loss.

"However, the fact that the person responsible has not been brought to justice only adds to their anguish. I would appeal to anyone who can help us find this man to contact police."

Council refuses to share homeless data with government

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Newham council is refusing to share rough sleepers’ personal data with the Home Office over fears it could lead to deportations.

The Government started the Rough Sleeping Support Service last year and it is currently being trialled.

The programme asks charities to pass on homeless people’s personal information directly to the Home Office without consent.

Human rights charity ‘Liberty’, which obtained information about the data sharing scheme through a freedom of information requests, believes the scheme could lead to the deportation of non-UK rough sleepers.

Newham records some of the highest homelessness rates in the UK, with 14,500 people in temporary accommodation in the borough and an estimated 76 sleeping rough.

A Home Office spokesman said: “We are disappointed with the councils’ statements and have been clear that the Rough Sleeping Support Service (RSSS) is not using charities or local authorities to target rough sleepers.

“The RSSS was established last year to help non-UK nationals sleeping rough resolve their immigration cases and access the support that they need.

“Charities and local authorities use the service on an entirely voluntary basis and no information is passed to the Home Office for assistance without their knowledge.”

Merger 'caused Bexley to slip' from being safest borough

Local Democracy Reporting Service

A controversial merger of police units has caused Bexley to slip from being the safest borough in London.

Councillors claim the impact of the new Basic Command Unit, combining Bexley with Greenwich and Lewisham, has had a detrimental impact on the outer London borough.

Since the new structure went live, Bexley has fallen from being the safest borough to the third, then seventh safest, and now fifth.

The new basic command units were rolled out across London in November, bringing together single police units into joint operations for two or three boroughs.

The decision to merge units comes as Scotland Yard looks to save £325m by 2021/2022.

At a meeting this week communities’ cabinet member Alex Sawyer said the model was far from working for Bexley.

He said: “I hoped things might start to improve and we could look at it objectively and say there are benefits.

“It should be said it is not all bad – there is greater cooperation around gangs, but the simple fact is we have gone from the safest, to one of the safest, to the seventh and now the fifth. It is simply not acceptable."

One woman was raped and robbed on 1 July in a residential street in Plaistow South while two others were attacked near to Leyton Underground Station and on Amethyst Road on 6 July.

On 11 July a victim was followed by a man who stole her property and tried to rape her in Central Park Road.

The Met said they are linking the attacks due to similarities between them and have issued CCTV images of a man they are trying to find.

Det Ch Insp Ann-Marie Waller said the images "give a pretty clear picture of the man we are looking to trace.

"I would ask anyone who recognises him or who has information that could assist our investigation to get in contact immediately.”

Radical plans for the Strand unveiled

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Strand Aldwych proposal visual
Westminster City Council
A proposal of how a reshaped Strand Aldwych could appear looking east to the rear of the St Mary le Strand Church.

It is one of London’s best known streets and is home to the headquarters of the tax office turned-entertainment venue and a London Fashion Week hotspot.

Now designers will be fleshing out their plans to transform the Strand – the street which includes Somerset House, and King’s College.

It follows a consultation Westminster Council held earlier this year to find out what businesses and residents thought of its ideas to bring the street into the 21st century.

Out will go the gyratory and in will come two way traffic in Aldwych in the theatre and hotel district.

There will also be a plaza near St Mary Le Strand Church which is currently stranded on a traffic island.

Designers will also draw up better links to tourist hotspots at the South Bank, Covent Garden and the West End.

The aim is also to improve air quality – a key target for the council.

The council is set to stage more public events to look at the plans next year once these detailed proposals for the area – known by some as the Northbank – are ready.
