New council leader pledges to end 'secrecy'

Local Democracy Reporting Service

The new leader of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council has said she wants to overhaul the “secretive” approach taken by its preceding councils.

Councillor Vikki Slade said while leading one of the largest councils in the country was a "daunting" prospect, she was "committed" to doing the best for the public.

The new authority - made out of a majority of Liberal Democrats - is the outcome of the merger of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole councils in April aimed at saving local authorities in Dorset over £100m in the coming years.

The new administration has promised to put the environment at the top of the agenda for the 12th-largest unitary authority in the country.

Council mulls school bailout

Budmouth College

Dorset Council’s cabinet will be considering next week whether to pay £600,000 in restructuring costs at Weymouth’s Budmouth College.

There are concerns that using taxpayers' money to bail out the school will be unpopular with residents, but the council says it has a legal responsibility to facilitate the conversion.

The Aspirations Academy Trust, which is set to take over the school, says it has a "healthy" financial reserve and is looking forward to supporting Budmouth's future - both financially and academically.
