Thousands 'at risk' from coastal erosion

More than 6,000 homes and businesses in Poole Bay could be at risk from coastal erosion unless they are continually protected, a council report has said.

BCP Council commissioned the environmental impact assessment ahead of a new phase of coastal defence works between Poole and Christchurch, starting next year.

The works are part of a £43m scheme due to last until 2032, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

They will include the replacement of the 80-year-old "Long Groyne" at Hengisbury Head (pictured) which is "dissolving".

The report by WSP UK says most of the groynes, which have a life expectancy of 25 years, had reached the end of their serviceable life - 30 had so far been replaced with about 30 more due to be replaced over the next 12 years.

Winter Gardens site in Bournemouth

People living near Bournemouth's Winter Gardens have accused the council of going back on a promise to keep "irreplaceable" trees when the site is redeveloped.

A reserved matters application for the landscaping element of the £150m development proposes felling dozens of trees, including 19 with tree protection orders, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Local resident Peter Adams said: "We were assured at the original meetings with developers that there would be no removal of trees whatsoever".

Bournemouth Development Company, which is half owned by BCP Council, said its plans had not changed from those approved in November.

A plan to harmonise council tax bills in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole within two years has been criticised by the council's Conservative group.

Councillor Bob Lawton described planned increases in Bournemouth and Poole as "morally indefensible".

Lib Dem finance councillor David Brown said the process, which would also see Christchurch bills go down, was the fairest way of bringing everyone's bills to the same level following the merger of the three council areas in April.

The Conservative group had also proposed a two-year harmonisation process but with smaller increases for Bournemouth and Poole, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
