Public asked for help in search for wanted man

Police are appealing for help to find a man after he failed to appear in court.

North Yorkshire Police say John Patrick Collins, 44, is wanted after failing to appear at York Crown Court to answer charges of drink-driving, driving whilst disqualified and perverting the course of justice.

They say despite numerous inquiries they can't find him.

Mr Collins usually works on building sites around North Yorkshire and lives on local caravan sites.

The North Yorkshire force wants anyone who has seen him or knows where he is to get in touch.

UK's 'worst speeder' caught doing 162mph in Yorkshire

A driver was caught travelling at 162mph on th M1 in South Yorkshire, the fastest speed recorded across the whole of the UK in 2018.

According to figures obtained by road safety charity Brake, four of the ten fastest speeds recorded were measured on roads in Yorkshire, with one motorist caught driving 152mph in a 50mph zone on the M62.

In total 2252 motorists were caught driving at speeds in excess of 100mph by West Yorkshire Police, up from 345 the previous year.

Meanwhile, 19 motorists were caught driving at speeds in excess of 100mph by South Yorkshire Police last year and 156 in the area covered by Humberside Police.

North Yorkshire Police did not respond to the charity's Freedom of Information request.

Nationally, a total of 9,596 motorists were clocked doing over 100mph prompting Brake to call for anyone caught driving at this speed to be automatically banned.

Joshua Harris, director of campaigns for Brake, said: “We have to make sure these dangerous, selfish drivers are taken off our roads."

Iron Age settlement could affect roundabout upgrade works

The discovery of a possible Iron Age settlement near York's outer ring road has pushed the cost of upgrading a roundabout up by more than £450,000.

Archaeologists unearthed evidence of a prehistoric settlement in 2018 during work on the Wetherby Road roundabout as part of a £38m project to improve the A1237 York Outer Ring Road.

A large ring ditch, described as "one of the biggest to be unearthed in York", was found, along with fragments of pottery.

According to a council report, the discovery, along with a series of other setbacks, has led to rising costs and may impact on the "scale and scope" of planned improvements to six other roundabouts along the route.

Hundreds of women report of sexual abuse

More than 500 women on Teesside have come forward to report suffering sexual abuse, violence and exploitation, the BBC has learned.

It's been prompted by a Cleveland Police investigation into the historical abuse of children and young women during the late 90s and early 2000s.

Last month Look North revealed that more than 100 women had spoken to officers about the abuse they had suffered up to 20 years ago.

David Waller trial: Jury retires to consider verdict

The jury in the trial of a former Cleveland Police officer accused of rape has retired to consider its verdict.

David Waller is accused of raping a teenage girl. He faces 10 other charges including sexual activity with a child, sexual assault and misconduct in a public office.

Mr Waller, 34, has denied all the charges at his trial at Teesside Crown Court.

He was a police officer with the Cleveland force between 2006 and 2010. The allegations relate to a period between December 2004 and April 2016 and seven alleged victims.

Six arrests in dawn raids targeting prison drug dealing

Six people have been arrested in the North East as part of a joint operation by three police forces to combat prison drug dealing.

Officers targeted addresses in Skelton, Grangetown and Hardwick in the Cleveland force area, and Easington Lane, Ashington and Blakelaw in the Northumbria force area.

The operation also involved Greater Manchester Police and nine people in total have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class B drugs and money laundering as part of Operation Exmouth. They all remain in police custody.

Disruption to trains across Yorkshire after lines blocked

There's "major disruption" to trains across Yorkshire after lines were blocked following damage to overhead wires.

National Rail said the issue between Grantham and Peterborough had "seen all lines blocked" with the following routes affected:

  • LNER between Glasgow Central, Edinburgh, Leeds, Harrogate, Newark North Gate and London Kings Cross.
  • Grand Central between Sunderland, Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross.
  • Hull Trains between Hull and London Kings Cross.
  • East Midlands Trains between Liverpool Lime Street and Norwich.

According to National Rail's website "trains between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 120 minutes or revised" with the disruption expected to continue until the end of the day.

LNER advised customers "to defer travel to tomorrow" while East Midlands suggested using alternative routes.

Man arrested in shop axe robbery investigation

A man has been arrested following a robbery at a shop in Stockton this morning.

Police were called shorty before 08:00 to reports of a man with an axe entering McColls on Darlington Lane and stealing the till.

Armed officers went to the area and a man was arrested nearby.

He has been taken into police custody and inquiries are ongoing.

North Yorkshire farmers urged to speak about mental health

Farmers and other members of North Yorkshire's rural communities are being urged to speak up if they're struggling with their mental health.

The Samaritans is making an appeal to coincide with the Great Yorkshire Show this week and the charity says figures show that one farmer takes their own life every week in the UK.

David Moyles, from The Samaritans, said farmers have "no natural outlet" to talk about "what's going on in their heads".

He said: "Essentially, they get on with life, if something's broken they go and fix it, they're doers, they manage their own circumstances.

"Mental health however is a totally different issue."

Three arrests in prison drug dealing operation

Three people have been arrested by Cleveland Police in a three-force operation targeting drug dealing in the prison system.

A warrant was conducted this morning in Stockton.

It comes after two larges seizures, including 6kg of Spice thought to be worth £750,000 in July 2017 from HMP Holme House Prison in Stockton.

Operation Exmouth has seen nine arrests in total and also involved Northumbria and Greater Manchester Police.

Yorkshire Water's environmental work 'unacceptable'

Yorkshire Water demonstrated an "unacceptable level of performance" to protecting the environment, according to a new report by the Environment Agency.

The firm was criticised after recording an increase in the number of serious pollution incidents in 2018 and, as a result, was given a two out of four star rating.

Yorkshire Water said in a statement: "This level of performance is absolutely not reflective of the company’s ambition to protect the environment and falls far short of the standards required to meet our aim to be recognised as an industry leader.”

It said steps taken to address the problem have lead to a 36% reduction in the number of pollution incidents in 2019 compared to the same period last year.

Only one UK water company, Northumbrian Water, was awarded the highest four start rating.

Teenager arrested in Middlesbrough rape investigation

A 17-year-old man been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman near a Middlesbrough pub.

A 28-year-old woman was attacked near the Pig Iron pub on Corporation Road at about midnight on Sunday.

He has been released under investigation while inquiries continue.

Tour de Yorkshire boosts regional economy by £60m

The 2019 Tour de Yorkshire boosted the region's economy by £60m, according to figures by Welcome to Yorkshire.

The tourism board says nearly two million people lined the routes for this year's event, with 28m people watching across the work on TV.

The economic figures, which is almost £40m lower than last year, were collected by an independent research company and compiled by Leeds Beckett University.

Police are becoming "increasingly concerned" about a missing man from Dewsbury who has links to the North Yorkshire area.

Alex Starikov, 32, was last seen by his family on Tuesday 2 July and was wearing a blue short-sleeved T-shirt, blue trousers with patches across the knees and carrying a large backpack.

Mr Starikov, who is 5ft 10ins, of stocky build and with short brown hair and grey eyes, was reported missing on Saturday 6 July.

Det Insp Mark Catney said: "We are growing increasingly concerned for Alex and would urgently appeal for anyone who believes they have seen Alex to contact officers."

Former vicar accused of indecent assault appears in court

A "revered" churchman indecently assaulted a teenager while serving as a vicar in County Durham, a court heard.

George Granville Gibson, 83, is alleged to have assaulted the youth in the 1970s while he was vicar of St Clare's in Newton Aycliffe.

Teesside Crown Court heard Mr Gibson is also accused of a separate indecent assault on a junior clergyman in the 1980s while attending the Church of England's General Synod.

He denies three counts of indecent assault.

The jury heard the complainants came forward after media coverage in 2016 when Mr Gibson was convicted of separate indecent assaults.

Appeal for information following rape in Middlesbrough

Police are appealing for information after a woman was raped in Middlesbrough.

It happened some time overnight on Corporation Road.

A 28-year-old woman said she was raped by a man near to the Pig Iron Pub at midnight.

The suspect is white, around 5ft 4in with short blonde hair and blue eyes.
