Devizes: Conservative hold

Danny Kruger has been elected MP for Devizes, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.

The new MP beat Liberal Democrat Jo Waltham by 23,993 votes. This was more than Claire Perry’s 21,136 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

Rachael Schneider of the Labour Party came third and the Green Party's Emma Dawnay came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 0.6 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 51,000 people, 69.4% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

All four candidates keep their deposits, after receiving more than 5% of the votes.

Devizes MP at centre of Conservative unrest

It's emerged that the MP for Devizes has privately called some people, who have been critical of the government's Brexit divorce bill, "swivel-eyed".

Claire Perry sent the message to colleagues on Whatsapp and it was reported in the Sunday papers.

Speaking on social media, Ms Perry said there are "no excuses for what she said", but that she was "defending hard-working colleagues who were being called "traitors"".

Claire Perry to attend cabinet as business minister

Prime Minister Theresa May has had a cabinet reshuffle.

Claire Perry is the new minister of state for business, energy and industry and, in that capacity, gets the right to attend cabinet.

The Devizes MP was seen as a protege of George Osborne. She quit her job as rail minister after David Cameron's resignation in July 2016.

But the pro-Remain MP rejoined the government last summer and is regarded as having done a good job since then as energy minister.
