Labour needs to 'win back trust' - Leeds West MP

Labour's Rachel Reeves, who has retained her Leeds West seat in the general election by a margin of 10,564 votes, says the Labour Party needs to win back people's trust.

Rachel Reeves
UK Parliament

The Conservatives have taken four seats from Labour in West Yorkshire: Colne Valley, Dewsbury, Keighley and Wakefield.

Ms Reeves, who has served as the MP for Leeds West since 2010, said: "We, with humility and respect, need to learn lessons.

"If we don't, we are letting down the most vulnerable people in our society. We are allowing our public services to continue going unfunded and we are allowing a Tory hard Brexit."

Leeds West: Labour hold

Rachel Reeves has been re-elected as the MP for Leeds West, with a decreased majority.

The Labour candidate beat Conservative Mark Dormer by 10,564 votes, 5,401 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Phillip Mars of the Brexit Party came third and Liberal Democrat Dan Walker came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 2.7 percentage points since the last general election.

More than 40,000 people, 59.5% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Five of the eight candidates lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Loneliness as bad as smoking for health - Leeds MP

MPs have been debating the impact of loneliness on communities.

It was something that Jo Cox had campaigned about when she held the Batley and Spen seat.

Rachel Reeves
Labour

Labour's Rachel Reeves - who represents Leeds West - fought back tears as she paid tribute to the work of her former colleague.

She highlighted research which showed being on your own can be as bad as smoking or eating unhealthily.

There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK who have "chronic" loneliness, with links to poorer physical and mental health and increased use of GPs, hospitals and social services.

Loneliness is worse for us in terms of mortality than obesity is and being acutely lonely is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
