Level crossing blunder 'cuts off festive shoppers'

Tony Roe

BBC East Midlands political editor

The "pantomime" of level crossing barriers in Newark closing at 10:00 rather than 22:00, cutting off the town to Christmas shoppers, has been raised in the House of Commons by Newark MP Robert Jenrick.

Robert Jenrick

Conservative Mr Jenrick said Network Rail had made the blunder on Saturdays, preventing shoppers getting in.

"It's a good job that Santa will be arriving through the air on a sleigh as he won't be able to get in to the town," he said.

Leader of the House, Andrea Leadsom, advised him to seek an adjournment debate on the issue.

There will be six schemes to help protect properties from flooding in Stapleford, Daybrook, Calverton, Newthorpe, Southwell, Hucknall, Gunthorpe, Lowdham and Carlton-on-Trent.

There are also plans for a new cycle network in Arnold and Carlton.

The local authority has promised continued investment to create the new £40m Gedling Access Road, which will help relieve the pressure from new housing.

Work on the road will begin next year and is expected to open by 2020.

Farmer Tim Butler created it for Sir John Starkey and it represents the Bramley apple.

In 1910, Mr John R. Starkey, then MP for Newark, planted a Bramley apple orchard and his grandson, Sir John Starkey, and his daughter, Suzannah have kept the fruit-growing tradition alive at their home in Norwood Park.

All Bramley apples are descended from the original tree grown in nearby Southwell in 1809. It still stands today.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said he was arrested "following claims he had allegedly engaged in the preparation to fight against [Islamic State] and possessed articles for terrorist purposes in Iraq/Syria".

The YPG is not a proscribed group in the UK and no Brits have been charged for fighting against IS with the Kurds, but the Home Office has repeatedly warned that returning fighters will face questioning.
