Trams could be mothballed without extra funding - Mayor

Sheffield MPs have written an urgent letter to the government asking it to keep buses and trams running when emergency funding ends this week.

Supertram services in Sheffield and Rotherham could be mothballed if the government fails to step in with further resources, Sheffield City Region Mayor Dan Jarvis has warned.

Sheffield City Region bosses were given £1.3m in May to support the Stagecoach Supertram network following a massive reduction in passenger numbers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Government intervention is set to end today and Mayor Jarvis has described shutting down the service as a "terrible situation" but it would come as a "last resort".

Labour MPs Clive Betts, Olivia Blake, Paul Blomfield, Gill Furniss and Louise Haigh have now intervened and written to Transport Minister Grant Shapps.

Mr Betts, who recently led a review of buses, said: “Keeping buses and trams running is absolutely essential to allow key workers to get to work.

“Having bus operators go out of business or the tram stopping running will cause short term chaos in essential services and in the longer term add to the problems of congestion, pollution and climate change.

“The Government’s financial help so far has been welcome and essential but it must continue.”

Labour needs 'trusted and understood' leader - Blunkett

Former Sheffield MP Lord David Blunkett says the General Election result is devastating for Labour and the party needs to go back to the drawing board.

With one seat left to declare, Labour has won 203 seats - the party's worst result since 1935.

Lord Blunkett, former Home Secretary and Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough MP, said: "You need candidates that are credible. You need policies that are believable.

"You need a leader who's trusted and understood and who empathises. We've got five years to put all those and much more in place."

Sheffield Central: Labour hold

Paul Blomfield has been re-elected as the MP for Sheffield Central, with a decreased majority.

The Labour MP beat Conservative Janice Silvester-Hall by 27,273 votes, 475 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Alison Teal of the Green Party came third and Liberal Democrat Colin Ross came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 5.1 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 51,000 people, 56.7% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Four of the eight candidates, Paul Ward (The Brexit Party), Jack Carrington (The Yorkshire Party), Barry James (independent) and Chris Marsden (Socialist Equality) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

City MP raises pensions question in Carillion aftermath

Labour's Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield has raised the issue of Carillion's insolvency and its impact on staff pensions in the Commons.

Mr Blomfield asked: "I think it will be very little comfort to many Carillion staff past and present when they hear that their pension fund is approaching a deficit of a billion pounds.

"Public sector contracts have made some at the top of Carillion very rich indeed. So what action is the minister taking to ensure that current and future pensioners don't lose out?"

Business minister Andrew Griffiths responded that anyone worried about their pension can contact the Pensions Advisory Service whose dedicated helpline has now responded to over 800 calls since the insolvency of the construction giant was announced earlier this month.

International students generate millions for Yorkshire

A new study showing the economic contribution of international students to parts of the UK has been released.

Figures from The Higher Education Policy Institute show that pupils who began their studies in Yorkshire and the Humber during 2015/16 generated £1.59bn for the region's economy.

The parliamentary constituency of Sheffield Central tops the country-wide list for net gain with the 2,456 international students who lived in the constituency and started their studies in 2015/16 generating £226m per year during the duration of their course.

The Leeds Central constituency was 11th in the table, generating £153.9m from international students during the same period.
