Belfast West constituency profile

A strongly Irish nationalist urban constituency and rock solid Sinn Féin seat, Belfast West was dominated by then party president Gerry Adams until he stood down as an MP in 2011. Since then it has been represented by Paul Maskey.

Sinn Féin’s majority in the seat is 21,652 – the largest majority in Northern Ireland and the 29th largest in the UK.

Belfast West has high levels of deprivation and a number of interface areas – where predominantly unionist neighbourhoods border predominantly nationalist ones - remain in the constituency. The Royal Victoria Hospital lies within the constituency and is a major employer, not just for the surrounding area but further afield.

In the 2015 General Election Gerry Carroll of People Before Profit slashed Sinn Féin’s majority and came second with 19% of the vote. But in 2017 Sinn Féin increased its share of the vote and Mr Carroll was pushed into third place behind Frank McCoubrey of the DUP.
