FirstGroup has announced that David Martin will join the transport group as its chairman.

Mr Martin, the former chief executive of Arriva, had been the top choice of activist investor Coast Capital to join FirstGroup's board.

However, The Times reported in June that Mr Martin had decided not to run.

About 650 bus workers in Teesside, County Durham and parts of North Yorkshire will be voting this week on a revised pay offer tomorrow and Thursday.

It comes after hundreds of Arriva bus drivers staged strike action in a dispute over pay.

Unite regional officer, Ray Sanderson said: “The ballot result will be announced on Friday morning.

“We won’t be revealing the details of the revised offer until our members have a chance to consider and vote on the deal.”

Unite the union, said that the 10 days of strike action by the bus drivers scheduled from 00:01 on 27 January until 23:59 on 5 February have not been suspended, as that depends on the outcome of the ballot.
