    Allerdale Brough Council has appointed an armed forces champion.

    Councillor Alan Pitcher (pictured below), who represents the Wigton and Woodside ward, served with the Parachute Regiment across the world and completed four tours of Northern Ireland.

    As the borough's armed force champion, he will be responsible for ensuring armed forces families living in Allerdale are given help and support when needed.

    Mr Pitcher said: "Making sure our serving and former members of the armed forces are supported through council services in the correct way is vital and I look forward to working alongside many organisations as part of the role."

    The appointment comes ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday.
