Firefighters have donated a large batch of equipment to the British Virgin Islands Fire & Rescue Service, whose resources were devastated by Hurricane Irma.

The Category Five Hurricane blew the roof off the Caribbean headquarters with 200mph winds, damaged all six of their stations, and destroyed the homes of many officers.

After a request from the Chief Fire Officer of the British Virgin Islands, Zebalon McLean, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, along with the charity SAFE South West, joined with other branches nationwide to help out their colleagues from across the water.

Mr McLean said: "Many officers, including myself, are extremely grateful for the kit as many of our supplies have been either damaged or lost. The helmets were a God send!"
