Gateshead fire: Four rescued from flat blaze

Firefighters have rescued four adults from a fire in a block of flats in Gateshead.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said a team of 12 firefighters tackled the blaze, which broke out in the Bensham area last night.

A crew from Byker in Newcastle also helped with the rescue.

Brigades in bid to prevent deliberate fires

Three of the region's fire services have joined together to launch a campaign to prevent deliberate fires throughout the North East, where call-outs are more than double the national average.

The Northumberland, Durham and Tyne and Wear brigades have launched their Fire Stoppers service, which aims to prevent serious fires which, they say, are placing additional stress on the emergency services.

An anonymous hotline has been set up, together with an online form for reporting arson. The fire authorities say any reports will be treated confidentially.

Gas leak prompts warning

People are being advised to avoid the Walker Riverside area of Newcastle because of a gas leak.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said the leak is affecting the area around Neptune Road leading to Oil Mill Road and Fisher Street.

It is advising people to avoid the area for the next few hours.

Woman dies in house fire

An elderly woman has died in a fire at a house in North Shields.

Firefighters and an ambulance arrived at the house in Dorset Avenue, Chirton Grange, on Saturday afternoon.

The fire, which was in the kitchen, had already been put out.

There was fire and smoke damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the rest of the house. Paramedics confirmed that the woman had died.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The bird, named Blue, was reunited with its owner after fire crews coaxed it down.

North East firefighters help in aftermath of Marsden Moor blaze

Firefighters from the Tyne and Wear service have joined colleagues in West Yorkshire damping down after a blaze at Marsden Moor.

The fire started in Sunday and was "likely" to have been caused by a barbecue at Easter Gate, the National Trust said.
