Heathrow Airport expansion

MP 'disappointed' over Heathrow masterplan

Greg Hands, MP for Chelsea and Fulham, has said he is "disappointed Heathrow Airport is going ahead with a plan to build a third runway."

A "masterplan" published today proposes to the runway by 2026 and complete its expansion by 2050.

The plan includes diverting rivers, moving roads and rerouting the M25 through a tunnel under the new runway.

Heathrow's expansion has faced fierce opposition, but the airport says it has engaged with local communities and other stakeholders.

The proposals are now open to public consultation until 13 September.

CBI welcomes Heathrow ruling

Tom Thackray, CBI Infrastructure and Energy Director, has reacted to the news earlier that campaigners have lost a High Court challenge against the government's decision to approve plans for a third runway at London's Heathrow airport.

“This clear ruling is another important step towards bringing fifty years of indecision and delay on expanding Heathrow to a welcome close. Firms know we can’t wait any longer for the growth in trade we need to see if the UK is to remain a globally competitive economy.

“As Heathrow’s plans show, expansion can - and must - be delivered in a way that benefits our economy and protects our environment as we deliver our ambitious climate change targets".
