A Berkshire charity says that misinformation has confused the public.
About nine swans were found dead in a field by the side of the river near Muchelney, Somerset on Friday.
It had been reported on social media that the swans had been shot, but police said this had not been confirmed.
Avon and Somerset Police is investigating and is asking anyone with information to contact the force.
Swans, who live on the moat at The Bishop's Palace in Wells, are trained to ring a bell for food.
