Engines off for Yorkshire drivers on Clean Air Day

Drivers in Yorkshire are being asked to turn off their car engines while waiting in traffic as part of Clean Air Day, an air pollution campaign, organised by Global Action Plan.

In York the council recently introduced a fine of £25 if drivers refuse to switch off their engines after being observed idling on public roads for more than two minutes.

Meanwhile drivers in Harrogate are being asked to switch their engines off while waiting for trains to pass at the Starbeck junction and sound their horns to show their support.

Leeds, which is one of Europe's most polluted urban areas, is closing 11 roads near schools and giving people the chance to try out electric bikes.

Leeds City Council were asked to tackle air pollution as a priority after roads in the cities were identified as likely to fail legal air quality levels by 2020.

The lighting of barbecues and fires in parts of the countryside in Calderdale could be banned in a bid to help prevent moorland fires like those seen elsewhere in West Yorkshire this year.

Fires and barbecues have already been banned on open public spaces in Kirklees after a blaze swept over a huge swathe of Marsden Moor last month.

A consultation into the introduction of Public Spaces Protection Orders in Calderdale has now been opened and will run until 4 June, with people in the district being asked for their views.

Calderdale Council’s chief executive, Robin Tuddenham, said: "We want people to be able to enjoy our beautiful countryside, but we also have a duty to protect it."

Labour takes control of Calderdale Council

The Labour Party has won control of Calderdale Council after winning 10 of the 17 seats available, four more than it won the last time these seats were up for election in 2015.

Calderdale 'climate emergency' to cut carbon emissions

A trial to cut carbon emissions in a part of Calderdale in West Yorkshire is being proposed by the council.

Calderdale Council declared a climate emergency in January and is set to begin with a trial plan in Sowerby Bridge

The authority will also consider taking action to stop parents keeping their car engines running while they drop children off at school.
