Asia Bibi was arrested in front of an angry mob, and accused of blasphemy. After a decade-long ordeal, she is finally free.
Asia Bibi blasphemy case
Pakistan's Supreme Court has rejected the final challenge to the acquittal of the Christian woman who had been sentenced to death for blasphemy. Asia Bibi spent eight years on death row before her conviction was overturned in October. Speaking immediately after the decision, her lawyer, Saif Ul Malook says the court's ruling is "a landmark judgement". (IMAGE: Asia Bibi CREDIT: Handout)
The PM is asked if she "personally intervened" to stop the UK offering sanctuary to a Pakistani Christian.
More than 40 MPs have signed a motion by the Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron, calling on the government to offer unconditional asylum to Asia Bibi, the Pakistani Christian woman acquitted of blasphemy after spending eight years on death row, who is now in hiding.
Mrs Bibi was sentenced to death, and only an appeal to the country's highest court saved her from being executed, and the government is trying to stop her leaving the country.
Mr Farron said: “It’s important that we demonstrate our commitment to religious tolerance and offer unconditional asylum to Asia Bibi and her family.”
Early day motions are not normally debated, but the number of MPs signing one can send a message to ministers about the strength of Parliamentary feeling..
