Artist floats light in the forest darkness

Martin Lewes

Earlier this week we mentioned the Dark Skies Festival coming to Cumbria later this month, and here is what may be one of the star attractions (sorry).

Steve Messam

The artist Steve Messam, who lived for a number of years in Cumbria and has floated large inflatable installations in the Lake District before, will be creating this display, called Intrastellar, in the heart of Grisedale Forest.

There will be guided walks to see it in the dark on the 21-23 February, with a minibus for those who cannot manage the walk.

Those events are the only chance to see it illuminated, although it will also be visible during the day, on the Grisedale Tarn trail, until 5 March.

Forest halts Christmas tree sales because of high winds

Whinlatter Forest has closed its Christmas tree sales and late night opening this evening because of the strong winds forecast.

Forestry England says Whinlatter Forest will not reopen until the trails and visitor area have been checked, to make sure they are safe.
