The council plans to revise its drug and alcohol policy to include random testing for employees in safety critical roles.

This includes workers who operate machinery, regularly drive or work on the highways.

Staff who handle chemicals could also be tested, as could those who face a high risk of conflict or who work at height.

Discussions have taken place between the council and Unison since March, after the union raised concerns.

The policy would include a "last chance" option for anyone caught with drugs or alcohol in their system if the person admits to having a problem and can show that they are seeking support.

If the policy is approved, groups would be selected for random testing between six and 12 times a year from October.

The plans will be discussed by the council on Thursday.
