New waste contract to 'cut emissions'

A new contractor will begin running waste and recycling collections in Ascot, Windsor and Maidenhead from September.

Recycled and garden waste will also be collected together to reduce emissions and cut mileage.

Consequences of Heathrow expansion 'severe'

A lawyer representing opponents of Heathrow Airport expansion has told the High Court the plans will have "severe" consequences for millions of people.

Nigel Pleming QC has outlined the case for the group which is challenging the government's decision to allow an extra runway north of the existing airport.

The decision is being challenged by Hillingdon, Wandsworth, Hammersmith and Fulham, Richmond upon Thames and Windsor and Maidenhead councils, as well as the Mayor of London and Greenpeace.

Government lawyers say the claimants' case is "premature" because they will have the opportunity to make representations during the planning process.

The airport's expansion has already been backed by the government.

Campaigners hoping to block plans for a third runway at Heathrow will be at the High Court later.

They say the government's backing for the new runway is unlawful.

They will spend the next two weeks trying to convince judges to overturn the decision.

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is one of the groups behind the legal action.
