The 34-year-old victim was taken to hospital after the attack, which happened after a disturbance on a tram shortly before 14:00, police said.

His condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

The two boys are being held on suspicion of assault.

Metrolink said services travelling towards the city centre would not stop at Abraham Moss, but trams travelling in the opposite direction would be calling at the station as usual.

The tram passed the signal to the right despite it showing a stop sign

The Metrolink tram went through a stop signal at Deansgate-Castlefield during a Friday rush hour, the Rail Accident Investigation Branch said.

Travelling at about 9mph (14km/h), the tram went straight past the platform - which was a required stop - and was on track to hit another tram crossing its path.

However the other tram driver realised what was about to happen and put on the brakes to stop before they collided.

The probe will look at the sequence of events which led to the near miss and factors that may have influenced the actions of the driver of the tram which passed the signal.

A planned strike by tram workers in Manchester next month has been called off.

Members of Unite at Greater Manchester's Metrolink system were due to walk out between June 7-10, during the city's Parklife music festival.

But Unite said today that following talks over the bank holiday weekend with Keolis Amey Metrolink, which runs Metrolink on behalf of Transport for Greater Manchester, a new package covering pay and employment conditions was hammered out.

Unite's members will now be balloted on the proposals, with a recommendation to accept.
