Traffic still queuing eight hours after M1 northbound crash

Rush hour is over but there is still heavy traffic and long delays on the M1 northbound towards the crash site.

The motorway has been shut between junctions 28 and 29 since about 04:00, when a lorry and a car crashed.

One person was taken to hospital and their condition is not yet known.

The road was originally expected to open this morning but it is still shut.

BreakingArrest after man killed in M1 southbound crash

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the death of a man in the M1 southbound crash this morning, police have confirmed.

Leicestershire Police said the crash, between a silver BMW X3 and a lorry, occurred at about 07:00 just after junction 20 near Lutterworth.

The driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene.

The arrested man, 51, remains in custody.

The motorway, between junctions 20 and 19, will remain closed while police investigate. The force has appealed for witnesses.

One patient taken to hospital after M1 northbound crash

East Midlands Ambulance Service has clarified one patient - rather than two as they stated earlier - has been taken to hospital following a crash on the M1 this morning.

It happened at about 04:00 on the northbound carriageway between junctions 28 and 29.

There are no details of the extent of the patient's injuries but the road is still shut.

Two people have been taken to hospital after the crash on the M1 northbound.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said they were called just after 04:00 to the crash between junctions 28 and 29.

They sent three paramedics in fast response cars, a hazardous area response team, an air ambulance and a road ambulance and took two people to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

The extent of the people's injuries is not known at this time and the road is likely to remain shut until later this morning.

There's a lot of activity on our Facebook page with so many of you getting caught up in the traffic chaos caused by two crashes on the M1 this morning.

Andrew Fletcher announced to his workplace, through Facebook: "I will be coming to work the ‘scenic way’ - could be a tad late." To which someone replies "no problem".

Others, such as Victoria Monk, have expressed relief at avoiding the delays. She said: "thank god I’m not at work can’t deal lol".

Annamarie Delmar said simply: "Thoughts are with the families."

Drivers are delayed by up to an hour on the M1 after the northbound crash, Highways England has said.

The delays begin about 14km away at junction 26, near Nuthall, according to its live traffic map.

It gets worse closer to the crash, between junctions 28 and 29.
