Newborn's unexpected arrival at Essex zoo

Colchester Zoo has a new attraction in the form of a baby red panda.

The infant, a female, was actually born on 14 June, and a statement on the zoo's website reveals they didn't even know their adult female was pregnant.

The statement said: "Mum Liwei was spending a lot of time in one of the nest boxes, only coming out for food, this sparked our keeper’s curiosity and on checking the nest box they noticed a fluffy red cub hiding inside the box!"

The red panda is not closely related to the giant panda and has more in common with bears and racoons, the zoo said.

It is classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
