Rotherham tip re-opening would be an 'insult' - MP

A petition against the re-opening of a rubbish tip near Rotherham has been presented to Parliament.

The site in Kimberworth

Sarah Champion, Labour MP for Rotherham, wants to prevent waste being dumped at the Droppingwell site in Kimberworth, which closed in the mid-90s.

Grange Landfill Ltd was granted an Environment Agency (EA) permit in 2016 to take in up to 200,000 tonnes of waste per year at the site and has stated that it intends to prepare the site for use within the next 18 months.

Ms Champion, who presented the petition, sad: "Should the site re-open, it would be an insult to local residents and campaigners who fought tirelessly against the tip more than two decades ago."

According to the EA no waste can be disposed of at the site until their officers are satisfied that the necessary preparatory works have taken place.

Grange Landfill Ltd declined to comment further on the situation.

The exhibition 209 Women is on show at Portcullis House at the Houses of Parliament.

"I wanted to give the photographers the total freedom of expression," says Hilary Wood, founder of 209 Women and one of the curators of the show.

Hannah Starkey photographed Yvette Cooper, Labour MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, at a restaurant not far from where she lives.

Before the shoot, she wanted to get to know Cooper and shadowed her at work in her constituency for a day.

"It really opened my eyes to what MPs have to do, from the very small grass roots to the big issues," she says.

Two other Yorkshire MPs, Sarah Champion Labour MP for Rotherham and Tracy Brabin, Labour MP for Batley and Spen, are also featured in the exhibition.

Tickets are free and available for booking on Parliament's website.

Labour's Sarah Champion, who is MP for Rotherham, is set to use a Westminster Hall debate this afternoon to press the government to tackle demand by criminalising paying for sex.

The Rotherham MP will say paying for sex is a form of violence against women, with pop-up brothels making it "as easy as ordering a pizza to go and abuse a woman".
