If you are joining us: Conservatives lose big in Essex

Doug Faulkner

BBC News Online

The Conservatives have lost control of four councils across Essex.

Chelmsford City Council was the scene of the biggest surprise. The Lib Dems overturned a 45-seat majority to take over the authority.

Southend, Basildon and Tendring fell to no overall control, while Thurrock and Colchester also remained without an outright majority.

There were Conservative holds in Castle Point, Maldon, Epping, Rochford, Brentwood and Braintree.

Harlow stayed under Labour control.

One million new homes 'vision' for Thames estuary

The Thames Estuary 2050 Commission has published its vision for the area covering Kent, Essex and London, which would see a million new homes and 1.3 million new jobs.

The commission also wants to see the extension of the Crossrail project to link up with High Speed One at Ebbsfleet, and is calling on the government to provide £29m for the development.

There are also calls to make the Lower Thames Crossing suitable for rail transport and driverless vehicles.

Redevelopment would also take place in Basildon, Castle Point and Southend in Essex, with a "new medical research corridor" in north Kent.

Cultural and creative industries will be encouraged to expand in the East London boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Lewisham, and Bexley and Greenwich.
