Nike has withdrawn a trainer featuring the Revolutionary War-era Betsy Ross flag following complaints that it represented an era of slavery.
Yet its shares rose yesterday. Why? Jane Sydenham, investment director at Rathbones says it because the company reacted quickly to the criticism.
"The one thing companies have learnt if you make a mistake... if you react quickly it's fine, if you persist that's when the trouble can really come," she says.
