Nearly 900 pubs closed their doors permanently in 2009, according to the British Beer and Pub Association. But despite the smoking ban, recent recession and cheaper supermarket alcohol, some landlords are managing to keep crowds of punters at the bar.

Photojournalist Harmit Kambo visited The Marquis of Lorne pub in Brixton, south London, to meet the manager Jimmy - and to find out why the venue continues to be such a popular haunt.
