More than 300 jobs will go by the end of 2015 under plans by a telecoms equipment maker to shut three offices.

Alcatel-Lucent said its branches in Swindon, Newport and Maidenhead would close but it was looking for a site in the Bristol area to run its UK hub.

About 255 engineers working in wireless design systems, mainly based in Swindon, will lose their jobs.

Some parts of the company will take on staff, however, an extra 46 jobs will also go in technical and admin roles.

The job cuts are part of last October's cull of 10,000 jobs worldwide representing 14% of its workforce and are in addition to the 5,000 announced in July 2012.

At present the company employs some 1,400 people in the UK which also include bases in Greenwich and Cambridge.

A company spokeswoman said its bases in Swindon, Newport and Maidenhead were in large "significantly underutilised" buildings and wanted to consolidate them into one site.

She added Alcatel-Lucent was now looking for offices in the Bristol area to run its UK hub operation including sales, back office, legal and HR.
