Three Britons, including two children, were killed after their car was involved in a crash with a truck in Croatia, local police have said.

The driver of the car, a 37-year-old man, and the two children died in the incident in Slano, near Dubrovnik on Thursday morning.

A woman and a third child are being treated in a local hospital.

The Foreign Office confirmed the death of three British nationals and said it was providing consular assistance.

A police spokeswoman said they were all British nationals in a car with UK number plates.

Road closed

The driver of the truck, a 46-year-old from Dubrovnik, was uninjured.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can sadly confirm the death of three British nationals and the hospitalisation of two British nationals on 31 July in Dubrovnik.

"We are providing consular assistance to the family at this very difficult time."

The crash happened on the D-8 road on the Dubrovnik Riviera in the south of Croatia. The road was closed to allow an investigation to take place.

Travel agents' association Abta says about 400,000 British nationals visit Croatia every year.
